Last summer my two sons and I majorly renovated son #2's house. While doing so, we installed ceiling can lights in the expanded kitchen Dining room and baby's room.
As well as a basement entertainment space. In all those we installed this LED BR 30 bulb.. for a total count of 37 bulbs bought at Sam's club for about $9.00 each.

Amazingly enough and contrary to what you may read from some supposed realists, it made my mind up that I would never install another CFL lamp in my own house even though I have a shelf full of them, never used!

Of the many we installed we only had a failure problem with one.. the very LAST one installed. And it drops out only after being on an hour or more.
What I liked is these fill up a 4 " 'old work' can**, which the owner/kid found for under $5 a piece. Looking at pic, notice they dont use trim pieces. Ever price can lights? The trim kit is the big hit. Note that using a standard incandescent 65w R 30 in a 4 inch can would overheat and singe the can wiring, so NEVER do that!

During, almsot done, note the wall, all cake pan and unnecessary ceiling soffits gone.
** Note only two cans installed. This why you use 'old work' fixtures in a new ceiling. You run the wire through ceiling joists with plenty of slack/loop so that final location can be done after the general locations are set. Cut hole, pull wire down and install. Contractor son says that is the ONLY way he will do it after this experience.

All done Same bulbs in all fixtures.. except 5 w LED replacing 40w Halogen in Range hood. When all 20 fixtures are Lit, only 185 watts are used.

The 16 kitchen ceiling cans are lit about 7 hours out of the day for about 7 months now.

When Daughter in law commented on why there was not 'zone lighting', save the two over the sink, we replied Why she wanted it considering that was less than 160 watts, compared to 1040 if they were standard bulbs or about 310 watts for ugly unreliable CFL
Note the wiring for pendants was also done 'old work' Allowed precise centering over Island AFTER it was installed, instead of 'best guess'.

More detail here: I did all the wiring and Plumbing, son # 4 did all else, but set the cabinets and granite countertop. Including major beam support for the wall on the right in most pics. Load bearing which the original builder seemed to forget. They perched it in center of joists and it {and floor} sagged big-time!
#2 son did layout design and wrote checks.
ALSO note: A good contractor will insist that all drywall work be finished BEFORE he starts on Hardwood floors And that floors be done before Cabinet installation. Much less aggro on cleanup and floor layout.

Wow, great stuff. I can see that your "practical creativity" has been passed on to the next generation. Nothing in the world is quite like an engineer with a vivid imagination.
