Butler hung in better than I thought they would. Would have been a truly great story. It was a great game.

Let the ESPN boycott begin. I figure Vitale will be back in his hole in a week.

    Bwahahahahahah.... I just LOVE Vitale-bashers!

How you think you gonna feel when he's been gone ten years?

Lemme give you a hint, Two Words:

    Howard Cosell!

Fog, I don't listen to him and then bash him. I avoid listening to him altogether. So when he hangs it up, it'll just be status quo for me minus the effort. The only time I suffer that tool is if he's doing a Maryland-duke or Maryland-NC game.

HD, Kobe and Coach K actually have a very close relationship. Kobe committed to Duke before deciding to go straight to the pros. That said, I think he is content to stay at Duke and get his fill of the NBA guys on a limited basis coaching the national team.

What Matt said -- I know he loves the game and cares for the kids. I also know that, contrary to what ESPN thinks, I cannot tune into a game just to listen to him. Au contraire.

Sadly, the ratings do not bear this out.

The Cosell analogy is interesting. It didn't end well at all for Cosell. I won't wish anything like that on Vitale, but I will hope that it ends. Sooner rather than later.

    Dang!

Somehow the database register for this thread got screwed up. I prev posted an 'extra' reply to get the thing back... thought it had fixed itelf, so I deleted it....but I guess perhaps not.

    If you see
"Post does not exist for this topic" in the future, just go to the index and click on the preceding page:
eg the sidebar 'last post' link pointed to 'page 4', I went to page three and 'reply' to post this.

For most of the past 15 years, if I hear Vitale's voice, I change channels -- even if Maryland is playing. One benefit of the NCAA tourney being owned by CBS is that it's a two-week respite from Vitale. Not even Brent Fussbudget, Not even Joe Buck, Not even Tim McCarver, Not even Howard Cosell is as irritating as Vitale. He pretty much broke me of my NCAAB habit.

Sorry.. I thought Don would at least get it.

The point is not whether one is more irritating than the other, it's what people think NOW when they hear the name Howard Cosell...

Who BTW, was pretty damn entertaining when he was on the radio PRIOR to Ali and Monday Night Football.

And sorry Don... your other names absolutely PALE in comparison to one of the most irritating Sport announcers of all time:
Ray Scott. He was exactly the opposite of Cosell and Vitale - a minimalist - he knew about 5 play descriptions and by the end of my first year watch him on CBS NFL PBP, I would have rather had two wisdom teeth pulled sober and no anaesthetic.

    OTOH... when CBS fired Scott, partially due to him slamming MNF announcers at a sportcasters dinner, {& Curt Gowdy told him to STFU!}
they replaced him with his colorman Pat Summerall who was probably the best football announcer Color and PbP... EVER!

Cosell was different though in that it was his voice/accent that made him annoying. Vitale's annoying b/c of his schtick. Kinda like John Madden or Max Bretos to a lesser degree (not as big as the other two). They're guys who have become a characterture.

I know old school announcers usually had those weird accents and deliveries, so maybe Cosell's was in fact a gimic. But for me, it's not the same thing.

    Now run along, little monkey.
