So I woke up at about 4 am and couldnt get back to sleep and so I look for something other than infomercials ..
'Android Apocalypse' on Sciffi or whatever they call it now.

    Gag a Maggot!

Well I usedter write up a user review on imdb anytime I saw something exceptional so I did one on that piece of crap. Thought it wouldnt hurt cause I hadnt done one in several years.

Just for fun I looked up my comment history and found out that imdb had deleted one of my earliest ones because someone called it 'abusive'.

Now... please dont comment here without KNOWING the movie I'm talking about.

    1. Is that really 'abusive'?

    2. Am I wrong? Or is it I'm advocating sex abuse or something?

Well, MAYBE it was the 1 of 10 rating.. I admit that is pushing it down a little.

But be advised I've watched You've Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle more than once each.

    - - - - -
I looked at a couple others I wrote and NOW I'm getting really pissed off.

    Like this on'The Swarm':
    THAT wasnt 'abusive'

And THIS rant on other reviews of Green Mile wasnt 'abusive':

    That didnt get deleted.

Looks to me like some of those 'titmice' got onto the imdb mod group, huh!

    /rant

PS: I think something got screwed up in the imdb comment database fields.. I didnt do most of my comments in 2000.
    Y2K problems?

'fog, I loved all three of your reviews, especially the one on The Swarm. I thought they were witty and pointed and accurate. However, pard, it must be said that you have shown time and again that you are completely unable to comment on the opinions/taste/intellect/knowledge of other people without being abusive while doing it.

That's what you do, and you seem to like it that way. So, if abuse is going to be the way you roll, then you should really get used to people being offended by that abuse.

By the way, I've never bothered to read any viewer's reviews on IMDB, but I think I'll give it a glance from time to time. Thanks for the tip!

Please, oh please, if there is any justice in the world, do a review of "Fireproof" with Kirk Cameron.

    I can't wait.

'fog. I suspect it had to do with your focus on the date aspect rather than focusing on the movie content. i.e., the "get in her pants" comment was pretty crude, and 51% of the population is going to find it offensive.

So.. let me get this straight:

This is an entertainment media site. I wrote something that is perfectly acceptable on Prime Time tv and a subject of probably over 50% of all entertainment media released by Hollywood.

In an environment where ads for KY Intense, His'n'Hers and what makes Bob smile are shown without barriers.

In a society where Supermarket checkout magazine racks feature -on the cover- tips for chicks on 'naughty stuff to turn on yer man'.

And because I just cut to the chase.... I'm abusive.

I see. Gee, maybe I should have focussed on that before I started the thread, because that would have changed the entire tone of my post......

    NOT!

Now.. just in case you STILL dont get it, I understand. Read other reviews on imdb. I'm guessing you wont find any trace of humor at all in 99.5% of them.

However I would think that every one of you guys would get the point. See the Irwin Allen critique.
    - Don will explain the 'Shelley Winters' reference.

I'm not saying it makes sense, it's just the way it is. Innuendo is ok; flat out saying it isn't. :shrugs: I just report the news, I don't make it. :)

Andy.. the whole freakin point of the post was to make fun of people, even like me, who take the time to comment on those media products. And read those reviews. INCLUDING whoever moderates the imdb comments. It's a good thing, overall, but most take it far too seriously.

aw.. shit. I had a big long winded response but just deleted it. If you dont get it you dont get it. PM me if you still want me to connect the dots.

so let's move on to something related.

ToL: Boys who see porn more likely to harass girls

Someone's tax money paid for that. And it's just the first of the "Research confirms the obvious!" I'll bet.
I'm just guessing, of course.. Money will need to be spent to verify this
Part II: Young girls alter sexual proclivities if they watch porn.

Part III: Porn affects marital expectations of sexual satisfaction

I guess I could explain how I came to those wildly speculative guesses if you want.

'fog. It came across as making fun of the movie, not those who comment on them. Just sayin'

    Movies: Moving on..

Okay, before my head explodes trying to follow...

First: Get all your buds to gather at your house or favorite pub, tonight, and play the SOTU Drinking Game:
Does 'Let Me Clarify' equal 'let me be clear'?

Also dont forget to arrange for a cab, first.

    - - - - - - - - -- - - -- - -
    Now on to the treacle:
Kid, Wife and I watched "All About Steve" {MOD} Sunday night after Dinner.

Yesterday Morning I was searching for something on google and '100 worst movies' came up.. and 'All About Steve' was on some lists ALREADY.

I havent even looked at it on imdb yet, but I think some people obviously believe a comedy has to have punch lines.
It doesnt, folks. That's about as good a send-up on human nature as I've seen recently. It pokes gentle fun at just about everyone and everything.
Even the casting is a parody. And it's just about perfect.

As well as a more serious message:
    Obsessive-Compulsives are People, Too!

Guess I should rethink Irwin Allen?

    ... nah!
    - - - - -- -- - -
Okay... I just went to imdb and read some reviews of "all about Steve"

    NOW, my head is exploding!

It's no wonder the world is in a mess and we elect the people we do... when so-called lay experts say what they do about this flick!

    CLUELESS CRETINS!

    heh...
    Funny you'd bring that up.
I liked it. I didnt 'REALLY Like it' but I thought it was alright. I'd avoided it because of all the nasty reviews but one day I saw it on and decided to see how bad it really was, with the anti-travolta bias canceled out. I dont care for Travolta, except in Get Shorty, so it wasnt all that hard. I just pretended it wasnt him.

Reaffirms my self-opinion regarding film taste.

Gigli aint all that bad either. Not GOOD, but not terrible.

OTOH, Ishtar is every bit as lousy as anyone says. Tried twice and never could make it through it.

Back to All about Steve... those people who panned it didnt even START to get it. Look at Bullock's wardrobe, look at her make-up!!!! for crying out loud.

You tell me another freakin Hollywood actress would do that! Not many..
    They're almost all diva's.
Bullock's willing to make herself look homely, silly and stupid. Because she knows who she is and she just does her job, and has fun doing it, and those who dont like it can shove it.

'fog. Sorry for stating the obvious here, but the fact that you like BF Earth and didn't think Gigli was terrible really puts your opinion of All About Steve in question.

On the "what actresses will do these days" topic - that myth is all gone now, killed when Charlize Theron put on 30 pounds to do Monster. Actresses who say no for image reasons (other than stances on stuff like nudity) don't get sent scripts the next time.

    Andy.. I dont get it!

You just made my point. AGAIN!

I dont see how the hell you think you're rebutting me when you keep pointing out the obvious.

RE: Re: RE: Movies: Moving on..

Hnmmm. OK, we're not on the same wavelength here. Lemme 'splain.

You disagree with the pundits about All About Steve. You also disagree with them about BF Earth and Gigli. Having seen the former and some of the latter, any positive or even non-negative view about either completely devalues your seemingly positive opinion about All About Steve. IOW, I'm going to take the work of the pundits over yours as they have a better track record, based on this small sample size.

You comment about Sandra Bullock's willingness to fully play a role, including acting neurotic, with crazy makeup and crazier cloths and comment as if it is somehow above the norm (at least that's how it came across); I rebut by pointing out that the bar had been raised well above that a while ago. While I do appreciate Bullock as an actor, I found nothing remarkable about her willingness to take the role (other than perhaps a lack of judgment).

So, either you were expressing yourself to a level of dry humor and ironic subtlety that went completely over my head or I got what you said and simply disagree with most of it.

RE: Re: RE: Movies: Moving on..

    okay, I quit.
Here's the whole point.. you started by pointing out that I was 'making fun of the movie: Message in a Bottle. Absolutely dead on. Why did you point that out.. I thought it was obvious. I pointed out that I previously had panned that movie but rethought it on the premise that perhaps it had one redeeming quality.. to aid seduction. And I tried to put a little non-blatant humor in it.

But I also made fun of some idiot thought that was abusive. And of imdb for taking it out as 'abusive'.

By pointing out Theron you mix genre's of the issues. I thought she was in the Renee Zellweger category. Not exactly the same as 'Ugly Betty' workup, either.

I think you still dont get my point on it... I DID say 'Think as if Coen Brothers made it', right? And I dont think you can deny that.

Now.. do you REALLY get THEIR stuff, or not?

Look I told you I called 'Sinkhole' just as those kids started running to the carnival right?

There was another brilliant part.. as Bullock and her buddies drive up to that site in that demolished Gremlin she is holding on to a rubber window gasket. That was a small but neat little jibe, yet again at obsessive compulsives.
Not in a nasty way.. just funny quirky. because it was in no way necessary for her to do that. It HAD to be in the script.

I'm gonna point out the obvious.. there are movies and there is cinematic art. The crossover is not always obvious. If you dont believe me watch some Buster Keaton.
OTOH, If you think 3 Stooges are funny, that's definitive . I dont and never did.
    But
I thought Marx Brothers were hilarious.
    YMMV
    obviously.

All right - I'm gonna call it.

You obviously don't get the points I'm making and I can't make heads or tails of what you're saying. This is a topic in which we might as well be speaking different languages. I'm not saying either one of us is right or wrong; I'm just saying we're not speaking the same language on this topic.

I think we should pick to safer topics, like politics and religion, and of course, Fulham :)
