    U of New Mexico defender

By now I'm sure most of you have seen the incredile video of U of New Mexico Elizabeth Lambert (maybe Fog can post them) and her 6 or 7 cheapshots in a college match v BYU. Each one seemingly worse than the last one, and each one worthy of a straight red and major suspension. I counted 3 closed fist punches, one ponytail takedown, 2 or 3 trying to break a girls' leg tackles.

The reaction on sportstalk ranged from the usual "chick fighting is great and I love her on my team to be the enforcer" to the more sensible "what would be our reaction if this was a male?" answers.

She has been suspended indefinitely, but a couple of questions need to be answered.

Having been a ref and a youth coach I want to know how in the hell did the ref and linesmen miss all those?? More importantly how did the coach not put her butt on the bench?? If I'm the President of the University the coach is in my office explaining why they shouldn't be fired (no answers of which would save their bacon). To say he or she was unaware of Lambert's play is a bald face LIE.

heh.. great minds and all that. Beat ya both times, though.
I actually was waiting for onna you.. I saw it Thursday AM.

Here's the good part, though... that is a classical 'viral video'.

Her freaking life, as she knew it is OVER. And even her parents are gonna pay for what I would guess was their attitude when she was coming up in Club Select and HS.

and there will be follow-ups on how it ruined her life, which should be played for parents at the youth level

"Liz is a quality student-athlete, but in this instance her actions clearly crossed the line of fair play and sportsmanship" said UNM head coach Kit Vela. Really coach?? Be sure to put that quote on your resume when your looking for a new job (I know she's not getting fired, just wishful thinking). If there was no footage, you probably would have gone back to Albuquerque and not say a word, maybe even lauded her toughness in a team meeting.

EDIT: The coach was quoted before the video was released that she was proud her team gave as good as they got, and of their physical play. But she had no idea about Lambert's antics... BULLSHIT.

Translation: "Gee, she NEVER did anything like that, before!" Yeah, right!

SoCal, you may be correct.. if so 'Liz will come clean'.
    and blame Coach.

Human Nature is just that way.
    {Except in politics of course, heh}

    I watched this last night.

I found myself laughing - because of how shocking it was.

Good points made - one thing I will say is concerning the referees:
if they acted on this at the beginning, the girl leaves with a suspension and gets another chance. As it sits- she is done, probably forever in the college game.

I am not saying it is the refs fault, just saying they failed to do their job to protect both the offended and offender.

Anyone else think this was anti-Mormon thing?

Irregardless, she needs to be permanently banned as do the refs.

Nah- I don't think so. I think it was an anti-Barbie thing. Look at the pretty and bright faces of the Byu players and then look at the dirty mug of the UofNM player!

Seems she lost it because they didn't just roll over and take it.

Not an anti-Mormon thing, but a anti-BYU thing, if you know what I mean. BYU is the monster in that conference. A powerhouse in most every sport, with a lot of money. To a state university like New Mexico they view BYU as being smug and elitist.

Those BYU players were hot. I'd totally try and get to know them.

Oh and what a bitch that player was.

Which is funny because tuition at BYU is probably the same or even cheaper than a state school. Also - the faculty is probably paid less.

Paid far less than any other private school of similar size- I know that for sure.

It is a good school tho, and rates well. Too bad the mountain west is so weak.

When my wife attended BYU ('94-98 ), tuition was, IIRC, about $1500 per semester, for members of the church. The church pays 70% of tuition for members, so that puts non-member ("out of state") tuition at about $5000. I have no idea how to convert that to 2009 dollars.

I will add that living in Provo as a student's spouse for 2 years, BYU blows away any other college campus I've been to when it comes to the number of very attractive undergrads. I was a very happily married newly wed and I still noticed.

BYU Soccer is big. The women are strong in NCAA and their men's team has a very good USL PDL team.

BYU does have the advantage in that Mormon athletes will often prefer to go there even over better ranked athletic programs. One of the reasons is that they guarantee you readmission after leaving for 2 years to go on a church mission (often between freshman and sophomore years - it's why their football team is so old); another is not having to deal with the seedier side of college life; you can get kicked out for stuff that isn't even against the rules in most Universities.

Oh, and I haven't shown the video to my wife. As a former BYU Softball player, she might want to sneak a trip to New Mexico to have a "friendly chat" :-D

    Disturbing.

While I tend to agree with many of the comments, I would still caution everyone not to come to conclusions about the coach, parents and previous clubs. She could just be one increasingly angry girl who perhaps had faced this team before. You just cant get away with things like that for long so I cant imagine it was a habit.

And 24, I'm thinking you wouldnt be too successful in getting to know these Mormon girls on BYU.

Lyle: you REALLY think this has anything to do with Mormons? You think this girl is making some sort of philosophical statement? Really?

Ms. Maureen: you REALLY think that this girl's teammates and coach didn't know she was certifiably BATSHIT? I mean, REALLY?

SCJ: You really think that the women's soccer team really cares about how BYU have dominated UNM in football over the years? REALLY?

24: You really think you have a chance with ANY good-looking girl at ANY college ANYWHERE? Really?

I played on several teams in my life, coached a few, and reffed in a league or two, and I'm here to tell you that there are crazy, dangerous, batshit players everywhere. I once watched an Air Force NCO destroy his career by punching out an officer on the opposing team IN A SLOW PITCH SOFTBALL LEAGUE!

This has nothing to do with economics, or religion, or politics. This girl is disturbed. She's the American female version of Joey Barton.

Don applies geezer-engendered life-learned lessons! Well, well.....

    "Dont attribute to dark motive or conspiracy, that which can be attributed to stupidity." {or mental illness?}
    - someone.. well -prolly- LOT of people.

Don, other than his uncalled for snark at 24 {it's the genes in his jeans}, hits the mark.
I'm saving this response for ulterior purposes. Heh

This is my assumption as well. Don't judge a book by its cover, but anyone notice the difference between her team photo and what she looked like during this match. Maybe it was just bad eyebrow waxing, but she was pissed-off from the start, and the not-very-nice elbow to the stomach at the beginning was the match that lit the fuse.

    Elizabeth Lambert, she's T-N-T, she's DYNAMITE!....
