Band Names

Always thought "Rich Kids on Acid" was an interesting one. And of course the Texas originals, "Butthole Surfers".

 

Vegas is pretty lame for band names. I guess thee band "Numb in Public" is the most interesting name. Not sure if they're around anymore.

 

In my environs, circa 66-68 {When keyboardists played REAL Wurlitzers} a very good bar/cover band {hadthe 'Rascals' NAILED, but also did great 'Stones and Mitch Ryder.}
- and Don can tell ya, that made for some GREAT BAR Band -
called 'The Hand People'.

Probably was sober enough to ask 'em what it was about, but too drunk to remember the answer.
Since it was a cover band, I figgered it was either a reference to self-abuse or a puppet - was before Kermit made sockpuppets COOL!

 

My all time favorite band name is 'The Gaza Strippers.' I love it so much I decided to give it to my fantasy football team.

 

My favorite band name out there right now is "Cold War Kids". I am not crazy about their music but love the band name. Another one I like is "Somebody Still Love You Boris Yeltsin." I am guessing those guys like to drink!! LOL!

 

Years ago, I saw a flyer for a band named "Zu Zu's Petals." It took me a moment to place the reference, and finally the light bulb clicked on.

In a similar vein was a band named "Eve's Plum." I wondered why a plum instead of an apple? Then, a buddy explained the 70's pop-culture reference...Eve Plum was one of the child-actors on the Brady Bunch.

Another favorite: Lather.Rinse.Repeat

A 70's and 80's punk-rock band called "The Dead Kennedys." I liked that in a sophomoric, poor-taste-but-kind-of-funny way. I was a college sophomore back then.

I've never heard the music of any of these bands, except for the Dead Kennedy's. which I hated.

 

I blame Frank Zappa!

 

Modern-day favorites: Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, Flogging Molly, Queens of the Stone Age, We Are Scientists, The Mother Hips, Goblin Cock...

If the name Tesla is obscure to you, you haven't taken a physics class.

I've always liked Iron Maiden (as a name & as a band). Named for a torture device and they sing history lessons. Pretty cool in my book.

I used to like the name KMFDM until I found out the acronym was for some German political phrase and not the rumored Kill MF Depeche Mode.

 

Ok, some obscure and not so:

- The Big Fat Pet Clams From Outer Space (later just "The Clams", I guess it's sort of like The High Numbers changing their name to The Who)
- Deaf School
- Millions of Dead Cops (they had to change their name, due to the near police riots the name caused)
- NWA (onther band that caused police riots)
- Free Beer (they had to change their name, since there WERE riots when people found out it was the name of a crap band, not free beer)
- Teenage Jesus and the Jerks
- The Sick Fucks
- Scraping Foetus Off the Wheel
- Plate o' Shrimp (see the movie "Repo Man" for that reference)
- Jim Bob and the Leisure Suits
- The Four Skins (no, I would NEVER attend any of their gigs, as they were exactly as advertised - four skinheads)
- Cycle Sluts from Hell (female metal band)

I know if I went through my collection, I'd find more interesting ones.

 

Kathleen Turner Overdrive (a real band in Atlanta referenced in the film version of High Fidelity)

When Jefferson Airplane became Jefferson Starship

No Rhyme or Reason I can think of for that change. I always thought Jefferson Pilot would make a better name but it was already trademarked.

 

Not all that exciting but its about all I've got as far as band names go around here in the middle of nowhere..... Mustachioed. Also weird considering the lead singer/guitarist is my 7th grade science teacher....
