Does this come down to money?

I feel bad for Hahnemann. But doesnt his wife realize Fulham is closer than Chelsea?

I'd say Hahnemann would be a decent backup but I know how Mike feels about him, and he's the boss after all. :D

It's funny how moments in following Fulham really shape how you feel about some players/teams. As you remember Josh, no love lost due to a certain smug Hahnemann in front of the Fulham away support a couple of season ago.

In the first place, I always thought he was a fairly good MLS keeper. But never rated him high as Friedel and Keller (or Joe Cannon, FTM).. and I think I'm still right.

I recall being a little surprised when Fulham picked him up. Thought there were better ones but they wouldnt be able to get their cards, of course.

And that brings us to smugness.... that would be the same that Jon Busch displayed at the Crew / Fire playoff last year? (and McBride was falsely accused of, in the same game) There Is a certain ego.. deserved or not.

Sometimes you have to step back...

    Maybe I better explain:
Fulham got him, pretty cheap, IIRC.. then loaned him to frekin' Rochedale. Two tiers down!

    I guarantee you, ANY veteran starting MLS keeper is overqualified for Div 3 {tier 4}

In Hahnemann's defense, I read that after each game he gives his jersey to a fan. When Reading told him to stop because it was costing the club too much money, he continued to do so and covered the cost himself.

When Reading was in the Prem, I remember he was a very solid goaltender who had the nasty habit of spilling shots at bad times.

FWIW he likes bands like Slipknot and Korn -- that'd drive me out of the room!

I think part of the problem was he still doing this in the Championship. In fact in the last game of the season, when they could have clinched their promotion, he let one in that he even admitted, should have been stopped. That being said, the Reading fans I work with seem to rate him pretty high.

I dont really recall WHY I downrated him while he was with Colorado, but that may have been it. Loss of concentration.

that can come and go ... and make a keeper look foolish at times when in all else he is great.
Here's a video of one such brain fart by Jon Busch in week 6. Add'l bonus, it's right after a trademark McBride goal.

It's important to note.. a keeper -oopsie- does not guarantee the goal. Moreno, though, is a pro and finished before he fell down laughing.
I never saw Busch do anything like that before.. betcha he never does again.

Words cannot express how sorry I am, but welcome to the MSL. You'll probably manage no less than 5 more years.

Here's MH's take on the situation. Typical Marcus:

And as for Mike's memory, I also remember a very warm Hahnemann saluting the Fulham fans after Reading lost at the Cottage [the Omozusi red-card match].

Fog: you never quite have accepted that MH improved once he left the MLS. He had two solid seasons in the CCC before promotion, and two solid seasons in the Prem. He was Reading's keeper in the first half when they looked like bouncing straight up, and then was injured. By the time he got back in, they were in the habit of losing, and they never recovered.

I think he'll hook on in England somewhere, and I can't think of a single MLS club -- barring Seattle -- that wouldn't be improved by putting him between the sticks NOW. NYRB & DC United for certain would improve dramatically.

    What?!!!!
Where did I say he didnt improve? To the contrary I certainly WOULD have expected him to improve, same as any other athlete.

I was only relating my opinion as to his comparative merits against his peers at the time he went over. I said I couldnt remember his faults, but that the occasional brain fart may have been the reason. and where did I even hint that he wouldnt be a prime candidate for GKOY from the git-go.

If you THINK it's the reference to Joe Cannon.. maybe that's a little over it.. but the point is that at the time, he wasnt. If you want to refer to 'present day comparisons, my OTHER two comparisons say what I really mean.

    Still he's a great keeper and he'll find a place, I'm sure.

It's interesting that you say that, because my recollection is that a lot of Mike's distaste from Hahnemann stems from his interactions with the crowd during that same match (though Mike said upthread that it was something that happened at the Madejski). I certainly could be wrong.

Thanks for the link HD, I found it interesting that he and his wife want to live in Reading next season if he can find a close suitor. I have to give the the guy props for having a helluva a run over there.
