Helps take soccer to near baseball status in Venezuela.

Moreno, who is 29 and in his eighth Major League Soccer season, has been rejuvenated by his increased role with Venezuela's team; he has become a regular after years of struggling to find a place on the international stage.

He also has been set adrift.

"I'm a man without a country," he said. "Sometimes I feel more American than some of the guys who were born here. But I can go to Venezuela and feel as Latino as Latino can be. I'm living a double life."

That life is complicated by sports and politics in his homeland, which is unique on its continent in its games and its government.
Futbol y beisbol

Born in Caracas, the capital, Moreno spent summers living with host families in Texas and playing club soccer in Dallas because his parents wanted him to learn English. It led to a soccer scholarship at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro. After 65 goals in four seasons at Greensboro, he was drafted by Los Angeles in 2002.
