    The Athletica (the St. Louis women's team) folded yesterday. They will not play another game and everybody becomes a free agent.

    Apparently the financial backer pulled out and they decided to fold the team. The men's team is safe....for now.

    Everyone likes to talk about how the midwest should be some hotbed for soccer.

    Ummmmmmmm.... No.

    This league is interesting. All fresh-faced girls right out of college sprinkled with a few veterans that play on the national teams. If they are not a national team player they drop out to have kids or start a career. I dont see how this league works in the long run unless they can cut the overhead to nearly nothing and have the ladies get a day job.

    Are they going to bring that NM soccer player in to the league. That might draw in some of the WWE fans to women's soccer.

    I said this last summer, and it's still true today. This is a tough time to be launching a new league. This economy has reduced disposable income considerably. The WNBA is also having problems. Arena football died. MLS could have some problems as well unless things improve.

    I'm really surprised they didn't make the league more regional to keep costs down until they got a read on it's viability.
