Naw... much as I LOVE ZZTop, would be even better if you could play and sing Bob Seger covers. In fact, I bet you guys could.

Why did I think of that? Because I just found Seger's 'Greatest hits' CD one of my kids gifted me a couple years ago and I promptly mislaid.

Ripping it to MP3's on my laptop was disappointing to say the least, the music db in the rip program mislabeled the album and songs, while winamp using the same db got it right but I have to pay $20 to get the 'Pro version' in order to rip it with that.
    .... but I digress.

In following up looking for more good stuff I checked 'YouTube' and after several layers of drilldown came up with a guy who does classic Blues Improv on the genre of Booker T and the MG's.

Now THAT, guys, is music and a guy who knows his music and is GOOD at MAKING MUSIC. Right, Don?
(Even tho Youtube sound quality seems to have degraded recently.. anyone else notice that?)

And if you cant see the connection between Seger, the poet/showman and this guy, wellll... I can't explain it but it's evident to a product of the sixties.

PPS: Springsteen, you dont qualify as Seger's waterboy.

    heh..

{added} Bass as Lead Guitar? Yep, it works for me!

In my very humble opinion, the basis of all good jazz, country, rock 'n roll, and what MY generation called R&B is blues. If you ain't got the blues at the core of your music, you ain't got your ass in it. And if you ain't got your ass in it, you're Barry Manilow -- I don't care how good your lead guitarist can shred.

'fog. You haven't posted a word there that I'd disagree with. The only Seger song I HATE is "Turn the Page." Just about every musician I know agrees that it is unseemly to be moaning about how tough it is to be on tour constantly because everything you record is in the charts. My favorite, you may be surprised to hear, is "Katmandu." It's not a particularly "story-telling" song, but it has his rawest vocal. Good, tight band, that can seriously kick ass when they rock.

I just checked through the 170 or so songs in our working repertoire and was surprised to see that of the 150 or so covers we do -- NONE of them are by Seger and the Silver Bullet band. Might have to fix that down the road. About 80% of our covers are from 1963-1979; that might have something to do with it.

OK, now the gloves are off...

Fog, if you're slamming the Boss then it isn't only youtube's sound that you don't hear well. Maybe a waxectomy from your ears will help.

I gave you a few suggestions for covers, so . . . . . .? At least one was pre 1979 and very apropos to our current times.

    Okay.. he IS qualified.
'Boss'? Boss of what and who says. As to my hearing it is perfectly fine, thank you. That's exactly the point. If you say Bruce's voice is as good as Seger's then it's you that's tone deaf. And I certainly prefer the Silver Bullet bunch to Bruce's band. Listen to the subtleties!

Springsteen = madonna think about that, too. Not saying neither isnt GOOD, saying the image is large part of it.

And consider this... Seger has no image, never went for one.. and his early stage antics are pathetic. His music makes up for it.

That WAS a chain-yanker, btw.. doesnt really matter to me who you like.. but that 'Born to Run' was treated as some kind of 'Anthem' sorta turned me against him. It was a cheap trick.. so to speak.

Yeah, that Springsteen, all image and no substance

I'm sorry, lack of subtleties? Have you ever listened to the Nebraska album? Tunnel of Love? Even Magic (admittedly not his best)? So you don't like Born to Run. He's done a few other songs besides that. And they are anthems, make no mistake. Unless you aren't moved by Thunder Road, or Glory Days?

I can't listen to you anymore. My copy of The Rising is too loud.

Also Don, for Seger is Nine Tonight or You'll Accompany Me on the table?

Since it's totally subjective.. {remember I also argue with anyone who uses "Elvis - King of R&R" phrase} I guess this is over.
On that I can agree. I think 'You'll Accompany Me' would be great for their style. Works for small group.

Dont suppose that troupe would want to do Night Moves?

    - heh.

"way up firm and high?" I don't know, the youngest of us is 51.

As for Springsteen, you have to give props to a guy who just got nominated for an academy award for the EXACT SAME song he won for 20 years ago. I have listened to "Philadelphia" and this new one, and I still haven't heard a single word clearly.
