This morning's San Antonio Excuse-Nuisance had two sports articles of note.

1. Slingin' Sammy Baugh -- the first of the great Texas-grown quarterbacks -- passed away yesterday at the age of 94. He's generally considered to be the "father of the forward pass" in pro football. Really? Yes. His first season with the Deadskins, he was the only player to attempt MORE THAN THREE forward passes. He was an all-round great player. In one game he threw 4 touchdown passes, intercepted 4 passes, and kicked an 85-yard punt. All of this I learned over my cornflakes when I was growing up. What I DID learn this morning was that his nickname had nothing to do with being a QB. It came from the laser bolts he threw to first as a third-baseman/shortstop.

2. On the other hand, we have news that both Odessa Permian HS' football stadium [seating 19,500] and Ft Worth North Richland Hills HS's stadium [seating 12,000] have artificial fields with 14x and 10x [respectively] the legal limit of lead. This was discovered when they noticed the toxins in the water running off the fields. For those of you who care, Permian is the school that Friday Night Lights is about. Anyhow, in addition to the criminal stupidity of having high-school athletes playing contact sports on concrete covered with plastic, now we learn that there's toxic lead in the cushioning surfaces just below the grass.

I thought it unseemly to comment on that thread. I will bend to the will of the people -- if that be the case -- but much depends on which personality Christian is assuming and whether he's lucid.
