Well, Hurricane Ike made its right turn even earlier than expected, and so San Antonio didn't even get a drop of rain. There's a bit of a breeze, but nothing in the way of damaging winds. The Tim and Bob Show did lose a gig this evening -- a convention private party at a bar on the Riverwalk cancelled because the guest speakers were afraid to come down [grrr] -- but we all know how lucky we are.

I've been concerned, however, about our east Texas contingent on the site. If you're in the area where Ike came ashore, give us a post and let us know how you're doing.

Pretty safe bet East Texas is without power, thus you may not see a post anytime soon.

My mother is in the middle of Houston and did just fine. Her only complaint is how stupid people are for going outside during the hurricane and letting their dogs play in the flooded streets. My boys and husband are bummed because it looks as if they wont be fishing from Galveston pier this Thanksgiving - unless they can get it rebuilt that fast.

Dont know what to say about those idiots in Galveston who live on the water and defy orders to evacuate. How they can do that and then expect to be saved by the government in the middle of a hurricane is beyond me.

No big damage, waiting for power to come back on. Crude will come from the strategic reserve until platform production is restored.

Unfortunately, we already have at least one station here in town that boosted its prices up 50c to fleece the fleers and returners. I hear that gouging is rampant in Florida now of all places.

We had the same 10c a gallon boost that we had when Gustav approached the Gulf Coast. I think that's pretty much what happens regardless.

One thing I did hear this morning, is speculation that it's going to be nigh on to impossible to get flood insurance if you live on Galveston island after this hurricane. If that's true, there's going to be an entire city of displaced people who CAN'T go back home. Stay tuned.

    Still mostly without power

Hey guys - I'm in Houston and we're still mostly without power; seems like it's generally just property damage but not much in the way of loss of life (thankfully). All in all, it's been pretty crazy, but everyone seems to be fairly safe (if a bit sweaty).

    Keep us in mind...

Approx. 50 cent a gallon increase, roughly the same as when katrina hit.

    Bastards.

Huh who would have thought! Sounds like we were hit harder by Ike than you were Don. Tropical depression Ike visited Southern Indiana today with high winds leaving lots of tree and property damage and power outages in its wake. Wind gusts were reported as high as 70 mph in the tri-state.

TonyTx; glad you're okay, dude. Hope the others in Ike's path are similarly so.

Barry, you are so right. So far we had a 35 second rain storm Saturday night [we timed it], and a good 45 minute soaking just when church ended today [my umbrella was safe and dry inthe car], and absolutely nothing in the way of wind, never mind damaging wind.

    Ike Hits Ohio Hard

More than a half a million without power in my area. And it's due to hundreds if not thousands of neighborhood distribution breaks almost all tree-fall related.
Part of my plat, like my dad's house, is without power. Part, incl my house, only sporadic outage, I think as crew restore more major breaks.
In this case it's frustrating because we can see the problem and it's not tree it's just a broken connector link and we know it will be among the last repaired... maybe tomorrow

Went shopping yesterday for emerg lighting when it was apprent Dad wouldnt be powered soon, only businesses open in this area including Mall areas, were running on generators.

It's taking a long time because a good number of our power restore crews are in Texas.

    {Fifty cent increase for gas already in station tanks is NOT gouging. I wanted to open up a discussion on that but just got smartass. For those who want to understand the real world .. if they dont already... talk about it on that thread or just keep up stupid 'price-gouge' one liners}

it looks like the 10c per gallon increase before Ike is being followed by a 10c increase just after. That doesn't seem out of line, really. We're the first ones to feel the effects of any shortage. The good news is that there doesn't seem to be any pipeline or refinery problems, although they'll be checking that out in the greater Houston area over the next few days to be sure. However, for all those fans of new off-shore drilling in the Gulf and off the Eastern Florida coast, the last number I heard for oil rigs floating away after Ike passed was 10.

Agree with 'fog about the "gouging" argument. Things are difficult to get in the first few days, and demand tends to go up. The real gouging is along the lines of doubling the cost of plywood as soon as it's clear that the hurricane is on its way. I haven't heard of anything like that.

In a local interview with a Galveston rescuee, most of the people who were stranded were veterans of several severe hurricanes and were waiting for indications in the water levels. What they WEREN'T expecting was the rapidity of that rise. The guy being interviewed said that levels roase 6 inches in less than ten minutes. By the time these guys realized what was coming, there was a matter of minutes rather than hours to react. Not defending them, but also not wanting to classify them as idiots.

Fog, hope you and your dad are doing well. Also hope the rest of the East Texas northward crew are also.

It's amazing to think of the benefits stores who install emergency power get in time like this.

Meijer {regional 'all goods} lights the perimeter of their stores. Center section: clothes, furniture etd are dark. After alll...

Which brings up an amusing anecdote: A source tell me that when Best Buy found out a Lowes next door had generator, they asked if they could tap in and pay to use it.
Yep, I'm sure people yesterday were really anxious to find emerg stuff at Best Buy.

Kid in Canton. {NE OH} says large part his areas of city are out too. And power not back on till WED. Crews in Texas, LA
AEP power outage map So my original estimate of a million was pretty close

I've been without power since 7pm last night. Saw two houses with trees on them during my ride to work. My mother faired better in Houston than we did in Ohio.

It's certainly sounding that way. They said on the radio this am that there were more deaths from Ike in MO than in TX, all due to the flooding.

In my hometown of Lufkin, just about everyone lost power (35,000 outtages in the area). As of Sun afternoon, 1/4 were back online. Lots of trees down, but that's the nature of being nestled in the middle of a national forest. Fortunately, they didn't have much in the way of flooding and zero fatalities. Of course, here in San Antonio, as Don has said, we barely saw a drop from Ike.

Hope everyone here at FFC has made it through the storm okay.

I'm still without power. I guess Ohio had dispatched a lot of crews to Texas to help restore power there. They've been called back now, but they're saying it still may take as long as Friday for us to get our power. There are huge trees down on pretty much every street in my neighborhood. If the wind hadnt been totally from the south, a lot more trees would have landed on houses.

In and around Cincinnati, Ohio there were initially about 800,000+ homes without power (approximated to effect about 1.5 million people). As of this morning, the news still reports approx. 500,000+ homes are still without power and that power may not be returning to all of them until Sunday.
We had 70mph+ gusts by my house and have lots of downed trees, but luckly we only lost power for about 6 hours on Sunday and don't have any major damage to our house.
The few gas stations that are open in our area have several hour long lines to get gas and gas is up to $4.20/gl.
Not every day that Ohio gets hit by a hurricane.
Hope all those on here without power get power back soon and glad everyone who's reported in is safe.

Now it seems that Ohio alone had power failure to about 1.5 million people.

Dad's power restored by a primary two man crew yesterday evening. Turns out that this small plat had TWO tree downings and the street next door is still without power because a line snapped rather than just having tree short the high-volt lines and blow the fuse. Evidently... fix easiest OR most affected first.

Brother's country plat - he is one of six houses without power out of about fifty. Other brother - entire plat is out.

according to The Weather Channel, Ike was still packing 70+ mph winds this morning in UPSTATE NEW YORK. This was an incredibly strong system. Usually these suckers lose their fuel once they come inland.

Stay safe and stay in touch.

We got our power back @ 11pm last night; the crews were still working to fix a downed power line one street over so we took them a case of beer to thank them for all the effort. Their supervisor was riding around in his personal car telling people when they would get their power back - what great guys.

We were relatively lucky to be without power for just over two days because I still know many people without it. We're on the same line as my son's elementary school so I think it was fairly high on the priority list.

It was kind of nice to have no electricity - the whole neighborhood spent lots of time outdoors, no TV for the kids, no computer, talks by candlelight, listened to the radio. The simple life.
