Colin Powell's rules of leadership --
    1. It ain't as bad as you think. It will look better in the morning.
    2. Get mad, then get over it.
    3. Avoid having your ego so close to your position that when your position falls, your ego goes with it. (This is my favorite one and the hardest to do.)
    4. It can be done!
    5. Be careful what you choose. You may get it.
    6. Don't let adverse facts stand in the way of a good decision.
    7. You can't make someone else's choices. You shouldn't let someone else make yours.
    8. Check small things.
    9. Share credit.
    10. Remain calm. Be kind.
    11. Have a vision. Be demanding.
    12. Don't take counsel of your fears or naysayers.
    13. Perpetual optimism is a force multiplier.

Yes McCain is swinging for the fences with this choice. Regardless of who wins this election, a new milestone will have been reached. I know nothing about Palin either; the pundits are saying Biden will tear her apart in a head to head. Whatever her debating abilities, I feel they are grossly overating Biden's. The guy is nauseating; talks like a clumsy thug.

The alcohol quote by Churchill is interesting, He, Lincoln, FDR (for family reasons -- he was lionized by my g'parents) and Gorbachev are my political (and non-military) heroes.

The problem with getting a quote by him for my classroom is that there is an embarrassment of riches to choose from.

... to carry on the Vonnegut theme ...

"I have long felt that any reviewer who expresses rage and loathing for a novel is preposterous. He or she is like a person who has put on full armor and attacked a hot fudge sundae or a banana split."
