Strong earthquake rocks Iceland

Even though I live in Reykjavík, not Hveragerði and Selfoss, everything is broken...

When the earthquake happened I was watching TV in my bedroom, and my TV literally came flying towards me, hit the floor about a meter away from me, and broke into like...5 pieces or something...

Everything made of glass is broken, only 1 out of 6 TV's survived the earthquake, and 3 (out of 5) computers need to be fixed (only the laptops are fine).

No one died (exept a few sheeps...), fortunetly, and not that many people were injured.

I held off on this until we could see more on how this affected world news. Seems to me it would have had a bigger splash if it had been in some other place.

since Iceland is one of the world's most active, seismically.. this isnt much news?

Of course, having a movie studio catch fire at the same time......

Ah, well. I second Don on my best wishes and glad you and yours had the experience without being hurt.

 

This is actually the first time I've felt an earthquake as big as this one, and my family and I have never had any damage in earthquakes...but this one was closer to the city.

To pettyfog: this earthquake is called Suðurlandsskjálfti in Icelandic, and these quakes are the biggest ones to 'rock' the country...The last Suðurlandsskjálfti happened in 2000, but before that a 100 years had passed since the last one. So for us this is very big news and we dont know what this means when talking about the future of our country...

About your comment: 'seems it would have had a bigger splash if it had been in some other place', I agree with that. I think that must be because our houses are incredibly strong (most are made of concrete), so most countries would probably suffer alot more than we did...I'm actually just thankfull while earthquakes stay here in Iceland, and arent knocking down houses and killing thousands in China... :?

Maria, I'm happy you are okay and apparently havent suffered any aftershocks. Are you sure it just wasnt the earth moving because Fulham survived.
