Ok, I watched the Chelsea - Liverpool match tonight and so the most horrific own goal by Riise for Liverpool in the 94+ minute of the match. I couldn't imagine how poorly he must have felt and what a devastating blow to do that when the match was less than a minute from being over in overage time.

Any one remember an 'own goal' they saw, or scored  , under worse circumstances?

I scored one, on nowhere near as big a stage (local U15s) -- a corner kick came in low from the left side, right-footed me tried to clear it with my left, the ball kind of fluttered on the way in, I mishit it entirely and beat our keeper

We went 1-0 down, but came back to win 3-1.

I almost felt bad for Riise after that own goal. What a great strike that was, if only it was in the right net.

This certainly goes down in my mind as an all-timer, think he wishes he used his off-foot instead??

Only one I can think of off the top of my head is Rose Bowl 1994 World Cup. Colombia (Valderrama at his peak, best team they ever had. Many experts picked them to go deep into the knockout stages) defender own goal vs the US (who at that time were considered slightly higher than a laughingstock). US goes on to win, Colombia doesn't even get out of the group. Pissed off fans/gamblers gun the poor kid soon shortly after getting back to Columbia.

EDIT; out of respect, had to look up the young man's name. It was Andres Escobar, who was gunned down 10 days after the team returned.

Steve, sorry to hear you had to put one in yourself. I figured, based on reading many posts, there were some ex-players on this site so perhaps someone had the displeasure of putting it in the net.......

and thanks for the video Mo, that was classic, nice distraction from remembering what happened to the guy from Columiba, not being much of a footie guy back then I do remember the news coverage. Terrible story.

Nev, that traore goal is memorable to me, because it was the first time I got to watch American Zak Whitbread [now with Millwall] play in Liverpool colors. The stakes weren't as high, although many of th young kids on the pitch that night have gone far away.

RR, as far as FulhAmerican ex-players doing that. Well, I almost did that twice. First as a 19 year old striker marking a center back on a corner we'd conceded, I beat everyone to the ball and instead of heading clear, headed onto the cross bar. Then 9 years later when playing as a sweeper, I tried to head a weak cross back to my own goalkeeper, and instead looped the ball over his head and once again on to the crossbar. An opponent had the ball drop at his feet and he was so shocked to get a chance at an open goal, he missed it entirely.

Good point...Riise has a left foot but he has no right foot, which is what he needed to clear that ball...I can't believe that his right foot is so bad that he would rather play the ball with his head only a foot off the ground...

...nobody feels worse than him and in the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter because they are level and if they take care of business at the Bridge, then it will all be forgotten...if this had been next week, then it may be one of the worst ever.

I was a sub in a game where we drew 3-3 and the our skipper (and centre back) scored the perfect hat-trick (left foot, right foot and header) of own goals.

It was one of the funniest games I've ever been involved and he still gets stick for it.

Lee Dixon's own goal is my fav professional own goal.

At any point in the match did your team consider dropping a midfielder deep to mark your captain?

okay; you've replaced FFC24 on the NBA thread as comment of the week. Good thing I'd put my cup of coffee down before I read it or I'd have ruined a good morning's work!
