Here's a tip, Brits... if you want ratings, figure out what you can offer to us viewers with short attention spans and lack of reverence for 'everything British'.

The promo for that news anchor tells us all we need to know about your attitude in coming here. You're gonna follow up on the Guardian precept that us dumb yanks are too stupid to figure out for ourselves what state the world is in.
Sorry... for that, I read the Telegraph. Because the state YOU'RE in is where we're heading.

Now...onto 'entertainment' How much of a F do we care about some idiot starting a restaurant and letting it get away from him? And some know-it-all comes in to save the day.. same script every time, different scenery.

And what's with these 'show marathons'? Do you show that many repeats in Blimey?

Jeremy and cars.. amusing at first. Punctilious supercilious asshole in the end {get it?} Oh... and your sidekick: MIGHT actually figure out what model to test if your going to trash the newer retro Mustang against your classic. The new one will blow yours away; curves, straight.. no matter.

And Torchwood.. has anyone YET figured out what the storyline is? What a bleepin' mess. "Dr Who" spinoff taken as serious melodrama? Get real. My friends and I used to make up scripts like that on the fly.. when we were 8 and playing 'cops'n'robbers' or 'cowboys'n'indians'.

Coupling is good for the 'nervous naughty giggles' crowd. How to describe it... hmmm.. well, you know .. 'Family Guy' before he was family guy but not a cartoon? Actually it's 'Friends' with viagra, smeared with an icing from Sex and the City.. but that wouldnt be as fun to compare.

I actually like it.. aren't I cutting edge?
    Otherwise,
I'm waiting for ITV to come and compete.

Actually, no.. perhaps it's a sign I DO expect better. I have 'hunderds' of channels to choose from.

But I end up watching repeats of Discovery, History and NatGeo programming most of the time. Unless it's original sci-fi channel stuff that DOESNT have to do with ghosts or wrestling {!!!!}. More stargate and enterprise, please.

And I'll admit Top Gear IS better than the 'Motor Week' episodes on PBS.. the one from Maryland with the fat supercilious but NOT funny elitist moron. I picture him learning his trade as a lot-boy at some Silver Spring Beemer dealer.

Oh.. and that wasnt directed at ex-pats who need their BBC 'comfort-fix'. I understand THAT. Sorta like my 5 months in London where I'd walk down to the Charing Cross McD's for a Big Mac fries and shake.

I said 'sorta' cause I also needed it to keep from losing weight.

    Don't worry, mate.

If I won't let some frenchman tell me what's good and what isnt, I certainly aint gonna let a brit.

Afterthought: I WOULD take WW's advice on the best aged cheddar, though... that's different.

Then I'd introduce HER to the wonders of Velveeta.

Like the definition of a 'Yankee'.. been a while since I've seen that written.

    - It isnt apparent on a net search, but it boiled down to a certain county in NH, the closer you got.

    And there's this:

    A somewhat neat test:

    http://www.alphadictionary.com/articles/yankeetest.html

I'm rated 46% Dixie, shows I grew up in Southern Ohio, with it's strong appalachian influence, post-WWII.

'FOG! DON'T KNOCK DR. WHO. OR I'LL STEP ACROSS THE POND AND STICK A SONIC SCREWDRIVER WHERE THE SUN DON'T SHINE!!!

Torchwood is crap, top gear is great, and the BBC has gone to pot since it tighened up its belt and stopped making shows no-one else would take a punt on.

As for Don's cheap shot - "When you're drunk at Kings Cross Station, your Irish; when you win an Oscar, you're British." -- Brenda Blethyn - Phoey! I'm an Englishman - not a Brit and I take no delight in the Welsh, Scot or Irish doing well at anything. I can barely be arsed to follow the Olympics where we are GB.

That is not a ringing endorsement. ;)

Yep... sorry. Meant 'Dr Who' spinoff taken as serious.. though you KNEW what I meant. You dont believe I'd suggest Dr Who as serious, do you?

According to THIS, Armstrongs were almost always on scottish Border Reivers turf.

As a kid I read a version where the clan was on the outs in Scotland and were south of border.. must have stuck with me.

Eh.. then I guess I must be proudly Scot. Though I dont care much for Rangers, either.

I guess I just identify with them, then?

    ;)

Good excuse to bone up on my past and correct my misconceptions, though.
