A Mind Exercise on Presidential Governance

    This is going to be a 'step back and consider' poll and it was inspired by the inane Clinton/Obama squabble over Obama's reference to Ronnie Reagan but we'll not get into value points concerning the issues suggested.

    That means NO reference as to whether the associations suggested are 'good' or 'bad'.

    Here's the question:

    Of the Seven Candidates remaining with a chance, however slim, of being president which three do you think are most likely to be like Jimmy Carter, and which three are most likely to be like Ronald Reagan?

    This covers domestic and foreign policies, separately. I thought of doing it with an overall blanket view, but I dont think that's practical.

    My picks:

    Like Carter on domestic policies:
    A. Edwards
    B. Obama
    C. Clinton/Huckabee tie {for different reasons}


    Like Carter on foreign policies:
    A. Obama
    B. Edwards
    C. Huckabee

    Like Reagan on domestic policies:
    A. Romney
    B. Giuliani
    C. McCain

    Like Reagan on foreign policies:
    A. McCain
    B. Romney
    C. Giuliani/Clinton tie

    Yeah... there was a lot of think and sorting around, there but it's how I fit the puzzle pieces.

    PS: Any post in this thread should not be used as 'ammo'.

    well, at first blush, I'd say that Huckabee is most like Carter because he's a Southern Baptist preacher and Carter is a Southern Baptist Sunday school teacher.

    Unfortunately, the Reagan comparison is harder to decry. The only current candidate who regularly hung out with astrologists and told the press that he'd seen UFOs is Dennis Kucinich. And I'm not sure that Denny's wife charted the stars before approving her husband's daily schedule, but you never know.

    Is that the sort of comparison you had in mind?

    By the way, for what you're trying to do to make any sense, you have to compare not Reagan's and Carter's presidencies but Carter's '76 campaign and Reagan's '80 campaign. Otherwise, there's no real basis for comparison and all you'd get is opinions.

    Oh, and, to get the kind of comments and results you're looking for, you'll need to find a site full of people who believe that Reagan was a mega-super-wonderful president and Carter was a horrible president. I know you believe that, but not everybody does!

    I'm going to have to start using your new nickname for the remainder of the elections, "pettyfox". That poll looks like something Fox News would run. Sheesh.

    The most significant difference between Carter and Reagan was that the former felt he was smart enough to make all of the decisions himself while the latter delegated almost everything. Their two different management styles were the key difference.

    Carter WAS arguably smart enough, but its just too much for one man to do.
    Reagan picked good people around him and, at the important times, gave them a vision to work to.

    Weellll... what I was aiming for was your GENERAL impressions.

    Not something that needed bullet points and check-offs to explain the selections.
    And not a poll on which candidate made the 'best promises'. I thought I was pretty clear on that.

    Or a snarky comment on the thread subject itself. You're always free to NOT participate.

    I guess I missed.
