well, andy, pettyfog, and PCB can all be comforted by the fact that their vote and those of their neighbors might make a difference come November. I think Jesus Christ might get no more than 45% of the vote in Texas if he ran as a Democrat and Osama Bin Laden would probably get about 63% if he ran as a Republican. In other words, count Texas' electoral votes in favor of any Republican heading the ticket. And, since the three guys I most feared when all this mess started are no longer running on the Republican side, I'm a bit more relaxed.

[if you're counting, that's Duncan Hunter, Sam Brownback, and Rudy Guiliani]

I'm in Florida. Whether my vote counts is a tenuous matter.

Don. LOL! I live in Maryland where it would take the Pope to run as a Republican for the Democratic candidate not to get the nod.

Interesting discussion. I think it’s clear that you need to be hands off at times but we've all seen situations where it reaches a tipping point and the monkeys start running the zoo. I've been one of those monkeys for sure. If he has their respect and yes a little fear in them the whole time that won't happen and hands off will work.

On the other hand in certain situations I think the head guy needs to get in there and grab the whole operation by the scruff of the neck. Katrina for example. Now Bush's lap dogs defend him to the death on this saying the whole thing was flawed and corrupt he was set up to fail. I reject that, if he had really gotten in there and on top of it and been a leader he could have at least held his people accountable and stemmed the tide. But as we know he has no such abilities.

I feel confident that we will be better off with any of the remaining four than we are now.
