gotta say i'm stunned. not because i am disappointed, but because i've completely ignorant about this guy.

i'm very intrigued by it, but the only shortcoming i see is his numerous short stints with clubs.

nevertheless, LET THE HODGSON REIGN BEGIN!

    got this from the Times:

Sanchez spent heavily in the summer but Mohamed Al Fayed, the club's chairman, is expected to supply Hodgson with a sizeable transfer kitty to ensure the club avoid relegation.

Fayed said in a statement: “It is my vision to combine the best of the fantastic traditions of the English Premier League with the flair and professionalism of the continental game, which I hope will return Fulham to its tradition of playing attractive passing football.

"I believe that Roy has immense experience in all areas of football and can drive this club forward for the long term. My commitment to this club has never dwindled and I am more than ever determined that we have the right man to turn round our current predicament and build for a successful future.”

agree with you and Timmy. Who in the world had him in their radar? The reports had mentioned him, but I doubt anyone on here ever considered him, He's not even on the list to vote for in this thread! hahaha

If FFC can play "attractive passing football" whilst avoiding the drop, then I'm guessing Hodgson could probably walk on water as well. I like MAF's swagger under the circumstances.

It does feel good to have a manager finally appointed...also, looking forward to a little excitement with the promised transfer funds.

Well, this came out of the blue - not in the poll and I don't think I saw him in the bookmakers' lists either.

As Timmyg points out, the many many short stints (this will be his 12th managing job since 1990) make me a bit nervous also. He does seem to have the right attitude regarding the relegation fight, as contrasted with Martin Jol's preference for not getting his hands dirty.

I plead complete ignorance on the hiring of Roy Hodgson, but if the rumblings of a large pot to draw from for the January transfer window are true, then I can get behind this! I was disappointed to see that it wasn't John Collins, but I think that feeling is more a function of his name being at the forefront of every news item about the Fulham opening for the past week.

If Roy is a mercenary type, I have no problem with that, just so long as he keeps FFC afloat in the Prem and out of the relegation zone...obviously, that's the one key goal now this season! :)

Hodgson comes to us having served as a personal consultant for Inter Milan. Here's some info on that:

"Roy Hodgson quit his role in charge of the Finland national team to take up a job working alongside Inter Milan president Massimo Moratti, the British coach said. An Inter Milan spokeswoman said the club had no information on Hodgson rejoining the club but Italian media reports in recent months said the Englishman was in the frame for an upstairs role at the San Siro. Coach Roberto Mancini led the side to a runaway title success last season and they are three points clear in Serie A this term. Moratti may feel he needs Hodgson to help with signing players and other background work."

Some other interesting tidbits on Hodgson from his own words:

"I work abroad and my name isn't always brought to people's attention. But I've been very satisfied with the job I've been doing over the years and my record is as good as anyone else." "I've had 32 qualifying games with Switzerland and Finland and lost four of them." "I feel neither the need to push myself forward or to behave like a shrinking violet. If people want to speak to me I'm sure they'll find me. "I don't have an agent or anyone touting my name around England. I've been very lucky in my career over the last 32 years in that jobs have found me rather than I have found them and I don't see any reason to change that."

The context of that text was speculation on him possibly being the England Manager after McClaren was sacked.

I'll admit I know little about Hodgson than what I can read on the net, but it seems that he's an experienced manager with a decent pedigree and I think that is what we need. I wasn't thrilled about John Collins simply because of his limited coaching experience. I hope MAF gives him similar funds as he did Sanchez. Perhaps with new personnel, Mac and Bullard back, and a new coach, we can turn things around.

Roy [or Brian] Hodgson's Black and White Army!

Who'd a thunk we'd get a successful international manager who also had a stint at Inter? I must admit I'd seen his name bandied about when earlier managerial openings occurred, but I never did the 2+2=4 thing even though everyone said "we want a manager with an international reputation to attract European players."

A healthy transfer kitty and a manager that is willing to look at international talent sounds like a step in the right direction.

Well, some info I have to share is that we have at least 10 million pounds to spend in January and if the right player is found, we will have 15-20 million.

Roy wasn't on the radar but he'll have one hell of a job ahead of him.

Let's hope Hodgson is thinking quality over quantity.

Remember how when Sanchez was hired he said something like how he looked at the squad and decided only a few (3? 4?) players were good enough and he wanted to overhaul the rest? And then he bought a whole bunch of players who range from C- to B+ or so? We've got plenty of depth, plenty of numbers in the squad at this point.

My point is, I'm hoping Hodgson has the idea that 20 million pounds represents 2-4 players who're capable of really making a difference, not 6-8 who probably won't.

He seems like a manager with a good track record. god i hope he keeps fulham up. what should this mean for Fulham's American's? Dempsey will stay in the starting 11 one would think, but what about Boca?

He took Switzerland to the 94 World Cup and they were not very good as I remember it. He has had stints in Serie A and the Premiership. The Blackburn MB talks about how they were hasty in getting rid of him. After two first time managers at the top level, one cannot argue with experience (unless it is on the Fulham MB). He can change the style of play to a passing game which seems better suited for people like Davies, Bullard and Dempsey. Without McBride, Sanchez's style was at a real disadvantage. Hopefully, he will only make a few key acquisitions in the January transfer window rather than a bunch of money spread around to a bunch of new Championship level players. Considering his International background, that seems more likely. He will get a chance to watch Saturday before taking over for January 1st with Chelsea. That should help with the level of effort. I wondered about making a change in the middle of the busiest stretch of matches, but at least it is to an experienced manager.
