Ah... yes.. The Saud family pays the price for acceding to extortion by the Wahabists.

They deserve all the bad press they get. 'But she WAS allowed to appeal.. which got her 200 instead of 100. And of course, the rapists got their terms increased so it's all good, right?

I wonder if she'd been non-muslim. Would she have gotten off.. after all, THEN she'd have 'just been meat', OR would she have been beheaded for tempting. And the rapists gotten off free.

This ties into something good that had happened in Baghdad in my time that probably was not reported my the mainstream media. If I am wrong on that point, I apologize in advance -- nothing was available to us at that time. ( I was there from May 2003 through Jan 2004).

Schools in Iraq are sexually segregated. What had happened in the girls schools is that someone would occasionally go to the girls school, rape a 9 or 10 year old girl, and not only would face no consequences for his actions at all, but the poor girl would be disowned by her family. By being raped, she had brought great shame onto her family name and they would toss her out of the family as punishment. One of the first things that we were able to fix over there was to provide security for the girls schools to make sure this did not happen, but apparently that mindset isn't going anywhere. I can't say this as truth, but I heard there is no Arabic word for "rape", that is a concept that does not exist in their society.

This is a point where women's groups like NOW are falling short in our country. I haven't heard a peep out of them on this topic. Why don't we hear that lady that was camping outside the Masters a few years ago saying how unacceptable this is? Why don't they use their resources to shine some light on this topic?

One of my soldiers put it well. He said there are some people that do not treat their young girls well. They didn't treat their old women well either. And being an older woman in Iraq was hard. They usually walked all stooped over, I could see that some were missing teeth, and I'll bet it was because someone knocked them out. They always seemed to look like their life had been harsh, and you could see it in the lines on their face.

Thanks for your service man, and I'm with you. Here's my thoughts.

Many feminists (my mentor in college was a serious lipstick feminist) are also multiculturalists. Many multiculturalists refuse to criticize other cultures, specifically non-white or non-western cultures. So a lot of womens' groups are caught in a situation where despite the awful treatment women get in Muslim countries they can't bring themselves to yell to loudly because these women come from an exotic land where the people aren't white or western.

The second and perhaps more important problem is that speaking out against the treatment of women in the Muslim world gets too close to what the Bush administration is saying or a general pro-war message. Many womens' groups simply aren't Republican or pro-war, and don't want to say the same thing the Bush adiminsration is saying or say something that might rationalize going to war (since war, to them, is an absolute bad). So instead of banging a drum about the treatment of women in Iraq or Saudi Arabia, they say nothing and just join in the general criticism of the war or Bush's policies since feminists are overwhelmingly on the left.

Before 9/11 many womens' groups were speaking up about the Taliban and Saudia Arabia, but once the wars started their energies went elsewhere. It is really unfortunate because they know what's going on is wrong, but they too often refuse to be harsh on people from another culture.

Or when anyone in the Bush administration nibbles around the edges of 'female empowerment' as in Laura Bush's visit on behalf of Breast Cancer awareness.. they are ridiculed.
All she did was wear a freakin' GIFT HEAD SCARF, AFTER she posed with no head covering at all.
"We want ACTION, NOW!" is the byword. While Bush 'meddling' in the Middle East is playing in the background.

    RE: Re: 200 lashes...40 more

I notice this, constantly. Why is this being put down to 'Sudan'? this happens EVERYWHERE there's a strong Muslim influence.

    Nigeria
    Malaysia
    Burma
    Indonesia
    Somalia
    Pakistan
    India
    Egypt
    Yemen

Everywhere EXCEPT Saudi Arabia, and Iran, where there's no need for such protests by the righteous.

Let me ask you all... if the Imams and Clerics who instigate this crap had to constantly worry about a bullet through their own heads at some inconvenient moment, do you think this would still be happening?

I dont... but that's what it would take and that's how it's going to end up.

Are you recommending something here, 'fog? Any other religions you'd like to deal with in a similar manner?

Oh, and could you describe a convenient moment to get a bullet through the head?

    I dont propose to deal with the problem in that manner. I am saying {as you WELL KNOW} that this is going to happen eventually. {as you SHOULD KNOW}

No... dont know any others that propose execution for sinners, at this point in time. Perhaps you do. And you could enlighten us, or do you just want to make a lame point?

Go on.. TELL US that Robertson is fomenting this in the streets.

Uh... no. Not for the target.

But what about the wider concensus from the "Religion of Peace"{tm} ?

Does it get any more ridiculous than this statement

The other ridiculous thing is that the students chose the name, and they supposedly named the bear Mohammed after the most popular boy in the class. If the teacher would have just spent all her time instructing and brainwashing like the clerics do maybe this never would have happened.

Look on the positive side. They are embracing a part of western culture - frivilous lawsuits. At least no one is calling for Ibrahimovic's head.

Ah, I dont think so. You know Clevelanders will never give up their team names.

Funny thing kind of related. I just met an Indian (as in India) friend of mine for tea because she just had a baby. She loves the Indians baseball team and had her baby dressed in an Indians shirt & bib. She also said he's going to play shortstop for the Indians. Anyway, she went to the ladies room and I was trying to entertain her baby. I was cooing and saying "oh you little Indian". It wasnt until I saw the shocked look on the faces of people nearby that I realized what I was saying. All they saw was some white woman calling a baby of Indian ethnicity an Indian.
