I'm sort of torn on this. My squadron operated three VIP 'Flag' planes like that and with the same mission. But they were well-worn

It might seem wasteful, but there's some justification in that it saves travel time and it isnt really a waste of manpower as it maintains training and readiness. The only 'waste', we thought, was the bi-weekly shining of the aluminum skin. Sort of initiation for the 'newbies' in the squadron.

Remember also that air and air support crew need 'soft assignments' to balance 'war-theatre billets'.

We all understood that... the only time we enlisted (and, I suspect, quite a few officers) in the squadron got upset was when the Squadron second in command retired and we had to fly his household furnishings and his car to Seattle... as if we were a freaking moving van company.

The quoted comment about "defense spending" is off the mark. While we still have three branches, Congress and the Defense Department are in two separate branches.

Upgrading aircraft gradually over a two-year period doesn't seem to be tax dollars wasted. I'm sure it didn't seem that way when the order was placed -- I'd guess around 2001 or 2002.

But I guess the right-wing bloggers are so thrilled at being able to criticize Congress for the first time in ages, they don't need much of an excuse.

If you actually READ RW blogs, you might have noticed there was plenty of criticism of 'our own party'. And especially on this topic... which after all, was signed up to in 2005.

I'm not the only one considers Ted Stevens, Trent Lott et al to be porkish pigs.

And, of course, you might take my comments as contrary opinion to what was stated in the quote. Maybe I SHOULD have said I disagreed with their basic premise.

I definitely took your opinions as contrary. None of that was aimed at you.
