Hi everybody. I'm doing a research paper that is based around analyzing online communities. I decided to choose FulhamUSA since I have been a huge fan ever since I studied abroad in London and watched many FFC matches at Craven Cottage.

Anyways, in your opinion, I was wondering how you perceive the online culture here. Is is more friendly than hateful? Typically lots of spamming? Are there cliques?

    Thank you for your help!

Well iced03, not sure when your paper is due, but after a little bit of time you'll get a good feel for the site. The adminstrators have done a great job of setting up this up (no spamming whatsoever), and there is one clique on here...Fulham fans. Everyone is friendly and respectful of differing opinions, and even on the political threads (see Golden Lion), no one crosses the line. I haven't been on here as long as others, but never really considered there being a culture except a bunch of people from all parts of the States and beyond wanting to see our team of choice make us proud.

welcome to the site iced...great topic for your paper. I must say that this forum is definitely friendly compared to other forums I've posted on, plus I can't recall any spamming on the mb. I don't really have anything to say about cliques. It's great to get different perspectives on this forum because we actually have quite a few British Fulham fans that post on here. The other thing I really like is it's not limited to just Fulham, but people on here will talk about anything and everything. I've been a member since August of 2006 and I have to say on many occasions this forum has helped me through the boredom that can sometimes occur during the workweek. On a sidenote, my senior thesis paper was on the integration of African American Athletes into collegiate Athletics and its effects on higher education, so I know that a research paper can be quite an undertaking. I'd be interested in reading yours when you're done if you are willing. let me know and good luck

iced03, I think this is a very friendly community, and we exist without the "be nice" enforcement you see on other sites.

As for how this came to be, check out the left column for "history of FulhamUSA." I'd also suggest that your paper might also touch on the fact that there are several England-based non-Americans who feel comfortable as part of the FulhamUSA family.

Welcome aboard, by the way. In addition to doing your paper, have some fun while you're here.

That's right..... there is no clique.

I keep the idiots in line, verbally instead of by ban or threat to ban.... and we dont hold their spongiform-brained opinions against them.

Cause you never know when you'll be in their city and need a place to crash or someone to have a beer with.

    OR... if you want to consider an alternative view, THEY are all one clique.. and I am the moderator {kitten herder}

    .. Do I REALLY need a j/k or a wink-smiley with this?

I won't toot FulhamUSA's horn (or my own for that matter) too much but out of all of the Fulham boards I've been a part of and soccer communities I've joined, this is the most productive one I've been a part of. Very unique for its lack of 'trolls'.

    Hopefully others agree. COYFUSA

I completely agree that FulhamUSA is nothing but a love-fest...
    ={)}.
This is the first & only MB I participate in. I lurk at a few other MB's of teams/sports I follow and everything seems to turn into a pissing match and verbal slings need to be thrown, no matter what the subject, you will never find that here.

    Kissy-kissy!

Exactly... because when you REALLY have to 'take a piss', we have installed facilities for that, right toward the bottom of the MB index!

Some of us older guys have to go more often...

    heh...

As a newbie Fulham Footie chick, I have learned much from the people on this forum. Very welcoming environment, very supportive. It's a board that I check at least once a day for comments on the matches and information about the team. I rarely go to the official Fulham FC site as I feel the negativity overshadows any honest commentary of the game. Sad, but true...

I've also been able to get in touch with others in my area who support Fulham...surely would never have found those guys if it wasn't for FUSA!

Haven't noticed any cliques, but I believe we have developed personalities based on our postings on this board. Surely, Petty is nothing like he is on the MB ;)...heehee!

And it's about as Spam free as my cupboard...which means there is none :D!

I am an English based Brit who has lurked around other sites and this is the only one I have ever posted on. From the moment you arrive you are made to fell welcome, and your views are treated with respect and equal weight to those that have been here donkeys years.

The site caters for a huge range of fans, from those who are just learning the names of the players to those who remember the Maestro, no-one is belittled or abused for lack of knowledge, or getting it wrong (which I frequently do).

This is in stark contrast to other sites where you can't be a real fan if you don't know who player RB in the 1984 2nd round FA cup match? (If you do get asked this, then it is a trick question, we were in the old second div and would not need to play in the FA cup until the 3rd round [I had to check this].)

COYFUSA. I hope your paper goes well and I would be interested in reading it once you have finished.

Hello iced. Very interesting topic for a research paper. I agree with all the others in that this is a very friendly site. The official Fulham site can get nasty but I think most of that is done in fun also. Even if it's not, it doesnt bother me because I am miles away. Terri mentioned personalities. I think people that post on this site and the official have different personalities on each board, myself included. Just interesting.

This site has way more political posts than I expected but I dont mind that either and sometimes give my two billion dollars worth (probably two cents to most people). The chat room during Fulham and USMNT games is also good; you may want to check that out if it's relevant to the paper.

I love the way topics for discussion are organized on this site. It has the effect of being very welcoming.
