    ... have a beer!!!!

To all FulhAmericans ... Happy Labor Day. For our non-USA members, NO, you didn't fall asleep and wake up on May 1. Here in the good ol', it is far too unseemly to celebrate organized labor on the day in which organized labor all over the world celebrates itself. Them darn commies -- who I'm sure are irrelevant now -- stole the day to parade tanks and such. So now we celebrate the first Monday in September. We so delude ourselves that this is the international norm that, on most of our calendars, May 1 is noted "Labor Day in Canada" -- as if it were our northern neighbor that was the deviant. But never mind.

There was a time when I would occasionally celebrate American Labor Day with a day off in England! But that was during the time when the "August Bank Holiday" would occasionally fall in September. Love them Brits.

The US of A is awash in the world of global interdependence, and labor unions are quaint little institutions -- like the Geneva Conventions -- and have only waning political and economic influence along the coasts and in the Upper Midwest. Here in the South and Southwest, "union" is a swearword -- like "criminal" or "Democrat" or "tolerant." But we still have Labor Day.

Once it was the occasion for parades and double-headers -- the quaint American custom of two baseball games for the price of one [also a thing of the past]. Once people gathered together in parks for band music and speeches. Not so much these days. It's still an official holiday, so those of us who are inclined to fly our flags for non-partisan reasons do so on Labor Day along with July 4, Memorial Day, and Veterans Day.

But what do we do on Labor Day? Well, some spend that last summer vacation weekend at the coast or beach. Some spend the entire day watching marathon re-runs of episode after episode of a substandard TV series. Here in my part of South Texas, we celebrate the life-long struggle of the working man and woman against hunger, disease, prison, police brutality, and uncaring bosses, by gathering our friends together in green back yards, around smokers and BBQ grills, near cement holes filled with chlorinated water, and drink wine or Margaritas or GOOD Mexican beer, and eat as much really goreat ribs and chicken and sausage as we can make happen between the raindrops. We sit around -- age today will range from 79 to 2 I'm guessing -- and tell stories and smile at each other and be glad that, for the moment, NONE OF US IS WORKING!

To everyone everywhere, have a great day, and COYW!

Thanks, Don... but I'll probably 'labor' on Labor day.

And I'll pass commenting on your content view.

Just this once, you old 'wobbly'!
