Maybe it is because I am fairly drunk, or because I am an asshole, or likely both, but I am sick of smalltalk; I hate it.

I just got back from the pub and was having a good chat with friends and then I see people I only know a little bit, or someone I used to work with or go to school with, and it's the same old useless smalltalk. Example:

    How you doin?...Good
    Weather is poor lately eh?...Yep
You married yet? Have any kids?...Nope
You still living at home?...NO! FUCK OFF!!

So then I get home and there is instant message from an old girlfriend trying wanting to smalltalk, and I have just moved in with my current missus and she was on the computer when it came in and now she is in a state over it.

Although it could be just leftover anger from Saturday when I skipped her family gathering to watch the match.

Let's just put it this way lads, I won't be needing any durex tonight!

    paging dr. phil...

mate, you need to make amends. it is the sacrifice, and proper act, in exchange for watching a fulham victory.

selfish speak maybe, but keep the good juju running.

I share your impatience with it... never been good at it.

However it is nothing more than a socialization ritual, and needs to be treated as such. sometimes nuggets come out of it.

On the second complaint... that is why it's a good idea to either use separate logins on your shared pc.. OR separate IM and DONT keep it running.

However you can use that to your advantage in your plea. You have nothing to hide, after all, and you cant help if that offhand converstion were taken wrong.

Obviously you havent been casting around or the old gf would have known what your situation was.

And OBVIOUSLY you would have passed on ANY other game, to please her.. except this one.

It’s kind of a necessary evil. Occasionally good things come of it but more commonly it’s just a waste of effort.

Minnesotans tend to be comfortable in silence, just sit back and take it in sometimes. I guess some interpret that as being cold or just boring because if your not saying it you obviously have nothing interesting to say. I'd argue that it just makes what we say more meaningful and when we do reach out and embrace someone its real not superficial.

I didn't mean to make it two subjects, but too late. The missus is alright, she calms down almost as fast as she gets going. I think we have an unspoken agreement, I let her be a thespian and she lets me be an asshole.

And the small chit chat, what you meant to do? It really is socially unacceptable to tell people to sod off when they ask how you doing, so I guess you just have to tolerate it, but shit.

Do have to say I love the concept of a non-gregarious / asshole political science teechur!
We used to call it 'Guvmint' but political science is what it has become. Should call it 'Applied AgitProp'

Smalltalk is a problem with me as well...

I think that I take it too far, usually going off on some rant about a particular subject that the other person and I should have only been talking about for a few seconds. When I get to a stopping point in my rant, I'll notice the other person is floored by my "stepping out of bounds" in the tiny field of smalltalk.

But I think there's a plus involved... They'll know not to try to make smalltalk with me again.
