    Don,

In a very non-gay way (not that there is anything wrong with that), I love you man.

I almost posted about Vonnegut the other day when I heard of his passing. After reading his books and actually meeting him on the streets of Sausalito, CA, I kind of felt like I knew him just a little bit. I had just gotten off work, was walking from the cafe I worked in, and while crossing the street passed him, searched my brain for why he looked familiar, stopped, turned and said, "Can I just shake your hand?" He of course obliged, and as if to confirm I had any earthly idea who he was (which apparently no one else on the busy street did), he said, "Kurt Vonnegut." I said, "I know." Then he asked, "So what do you do?" My reply, and I am still undecided if it was one of the stupider things I have said in my life, "I read your books." And I walked away confused with myself, possibly more than Vonnegut at that moment.

Then, no lie, 15 yards later, Jackie Mason asked me for directions.

My most memorable line from a Vonnegut book - "Hold onto your hats, we could end up miles from here!"

I've just started reading Vonnegut as he is from Indianapolis. Have heard lots of good things but never bought a book. I'm on Timequake now. Like it so far! Too bad he's passed on.

Well, hurry up and get your cheap thrills.... then you can get into deep thinkers like Clarke, Asimov and Heinlein.

No disrespect REALLY intended, he's dead... but Vonnegut was about as significant to real SF as Serling.
