    RE: DC United

And THERE you have it..... Compare and Analyse; the best MLS team EVER, over the span of the league is TA-DUM: DCUnited!

Like I say... this from a Crew Fan.

I put LA somewhere around 3rd or 4th... After SJ/Houston and perhaps Chicago

Now to be fair, we should consider the Cosmos (the category was "best American Team ever") but since they don't exist anymore, I think that's enough to list DC United over them.

Ummm... now you've muddled it up!

    First we have to decide what the definition is "IS" is.. thus by declension "ARE"; {calling Bill Clinton!}
    THEN
decide the role and meaning of "ever".

Since in debating OTHER 'best-of's', when EVER is thrown in then you have to say that it is PROBABLY the Cosmos.

'nuff said... I hope dirtyboy realizes this site is NOT populated by "{X}TID!" types.

-not that there's anything wrong with that. Heh...

The 'Best Team EVER.." wouldnt EVEN have let Steve Sampson mop the locker room floors!

Dboy, that SUCKS! Sorry about the hit to the wallet. Anyway, here's something I wrote to some friends of mine earlier today about the "coup:"

"I think it will be good for the game here, but if the MLS is counting on
Becks to bring soccer fully into the mainstream, i think they'll be
disappointed. There is still such a stigma to the game amongst a great
majority of US sports fans, and I don't think one player in the twilght of
his career will be able to change that. Becks will make the casual soccer
fans like me pay a bit more attention and will greatly improve ticket
sales, merchandise sales, etc, but only within that demographic. For
instance, by the end of the day, I probably will have begun researching the MLS schedule to figure out when LA plays in Columbus. But for average person on the street, he's still 'just a soccer player.' But we'll see.
Maybe MLS will get more SportsCenter time, or at least the Galaxy will. And that's another point...anyone who gets roped in as a "new" MLS fan will probably only pay attention to the one team. I don't think it does a
tremendous amount of good to get people to pay attention to a single team in a league of (I don't even know how many).
And also, maybe Becks will be a great ad guy and will work his way into the public consciousness here by doing tv spots for Nike (or is he with
Adidas these days?), Gatorade, or whoever. That would certainly help."

In addition to that bit, I also think the MLS should plays some of its games at neutral sites this year, to capitalize on the signing, and to get some visibility in markets other than league cities.

Galaxy have the best overall record in the history of the league. We have the best stadium, most fans and some of the best players.

Sampson was/is a douche, but we had an idiot of a GM. A little bit of Costa Rican cocaine before a plane ride fixed that problem.

Nevertheless I’m just busting your balls. This is great for the league and the Galaxy. They stated they have already sold 1000 season tickets this morning. That’s more than Columbus and KC combined!

I think these guys are the best. Who has had a better run in MLS?

    Fall River Marksmen
With the folding of the SNESL, the Fall River United joined the new professional American Soccer League. After a disappointing first season, the team, with new financial backing, became the Fall River Marksmen and arguably became the best soccer team in the country.

The club earned a "double" in 1924 winning both the league and U.S. Open Cup. In 1930 they earned a "treble" winning the league, the U.S. Open Cup and the Lewis Cup (the ASL's league cup).

Before the spring 1931 season, merged with the New York Soccer Club to become the New York Yankees.

Yes, it is estimated that Beckham will earn $250 mil. over 5 years but if reportrs I have heard on soeccernet are correct, he will have to negotiate most of that himself.

Beckham's reported salary with the Galaxy will be approx. $9 mil./year with most of that NOT coming from MLS proper but rather from the owner of the Galaxy, Anshutz Entertainment. What's especially sweet for Beckham, however, is that, unlike during his tenure with Man U and Real, he will not have to share with the Galaxy any sponsorship money he negotiates.

If all of this is correct, at least in the short run, this is a great deal for MLS. Moreover, if Beckham mania takes hold and he remains reasonably healthy for 5 years, $45 mil./ 5 years could prove to be a great bargain.

Definitely a great bargin, and even if it somehow fails - it won't kill MLS. They got their sweet deal with ESPN before Beckham. The sport and the league was growing before Beckham. And Phil Anschulz has likely put in FAR more than $250 million to keep MLS afloat when the league has early troubles. AEG has got an unbelievable amount of money.

Fortunately for MLS, Beckham is not a guy who slacks off. His work ethic, as I understand it, is sound. He's only 31, he can definitely play full first time minutes in MLS for a few years and be arguably the top midfielder in the league. After losing the England captaincy and being benched in Real Madrid, Beckham has something to prove to the world of soccer.

I look at this kind of like Wayne Gretzky going to LA. The Great One turned a lot people into hockey fans in the West Coast and in America. While Beckham isn't going to be dropping 30 goals in MLS, he can definitely turn a growing stable but generally ignored soccer league into a recognizable one in MLS. Which is all good.

Good move on LA to make this happen. I had a feeling something like that would happen when I read Real Madrid would not renew Beckham's contract.

I think the MLS has made a great move with the "Beckham Rule". With the poor play of the US National Team, this past World Cup....to help drum up and keep interest in the sport. I believe the new rule is a stoke of genius for the league. So with the exemption in place, they went out and got the player the rule was named after. Nobody really believed, he was ready to come to the MLS at this time....but he did.

Some people don't think he'll be able to keep the masses interested in soccer, after they watch him play....I bet he'll surprise us again with hard work and making everyone around him better....I just wonder who's going to make the jump next?

According to several sources, Edgar Davidz. He's more believable as a MLS jumper though. He's lost his spot with Spurs and he's lost a step at least -- like C. Reyna.

Davids and fat Ronaldo are the names I've heard, though I suspect Radz may be on his way to Toronto this summer.

The money is broken up as 51 million over 5 years, the rest would be incentives, making the deal worth up to 250 million dollars. MLS is only responsible for the max contract amount alloted to any player, the rest of the money would come from AEG (conveniently this rule was put in last season and was named the Becham Rule). If Becks were to pick up all the incentives in the contract this deal would not only beat Arod's deal, it would nearly double it since Arod's deal was for 252 million over 10 years. MLS should be in no trouble at all with this deal, because of the so called Becham Rule AEG takes the brunt of the contract.
