That was a pretty ugly brawl... but if someone threw a headlock on me while I was going to the basket, I think I'd throw a punch, too.

And what business does an opposing coach have telling Carmelo whether he should be on the court... blowout or not!

Take it to the press and Geoge Karl, you idiot. Maybe the Knicks ought to fire Thomas and hire Allen Iverson as player / coach... same kinda mouth but could back it up.

'Melo certainly didn't help his reputation by taking a sucker punch at Mardy Collins then back-pedaling to the center of the court. It was easily the ugliest scene in the NBA since the Palace incident. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the players (i.e. Anthony, Nate Rob) were suspended for 10+ games.

Yea, Melo should get a big suspension for that sucker punch...and then running off. You just wonder, if the league wants to make an example of them. I agree 10+ games.

You could here the violins in the back ground as Isiah cried about the Nuggets starters still being in. He's made a mess of that roster and should take his beat down and not cry about it to the media.

Stern is building the league around Anthony. He'll get 2 games and some "anger management;" a couple of "don't be naughty" PSAs and he'll be back as the NBAs poster boy.

And nice spin, Petty. 10 folks throwing punches and Thomas is at fault for telling Anthony that he shouldn't have been on the floor. What else could poor Carmelo do? I know every time an opposing coach said something to me during a soccer match or a b-ball game, I punched someone else in the eye and then ran away like my panties were leaking.

That was a separate but contributing issue, Don... did the brawl start due to the running headlock? Or not?

Why would a knick defender do that? You tell me.

I'm not excusing Carmelo anything, he should be suspended some games and he actually SHOULDNT have been out there, but it wasnt Thomas' business to tell Carmelo that..none of this stands alone.

Petty, did you see the play and the brawl? Because reading your posts, it sounds like you did not. The foul by Mardy Collins was not that bad. He barely got him on the neck and in fact he kind of bear-hugged him a bit and because of JR SMith's movement, he got him around the neck a bit. On top of that, Collins had no intentions of taking him down or being violent with the contact.

One might ask why he would foul like that with less than a minute to go in the game and the simple answer is pride. The Nuggets were still running up and down the court up 20 with a minute to go looking for more points. In fact, a minute before that the same JR Smith did a reverse jam on a fast break and Knicks players did not want to see that again. I completely understand that and as a Knick player, I would not be happy to see the opposing team running up the score.

As for Carmelo, what a wuss. Talk about a hit and run, that was Carmelo on Saturday. If you are going to hit someone, at least stand there and be ready for the counter-attack instead of running like a baby to half court. I hope the league nails Carmelo, but as Don said, they likely will give him two games. What a joke.

Excellant point...Hatter. He'll probably get a slap on the wrist. Can't wait to see what Stern will do with this one. It should be similar to prior suspensions, but as you said this a young star in the league and not some hated player or journeyman in the league...

I saw the replay of original sequence shown starting with drive, before they edited it down.
Yeah, the foul itself wasnt likely to do bodily harm.. but it was equivalent of grabbing and holding shirt in the box.
    {which my have colored my judgement because the first time I saw that was in a HS tournament game and the ref awarded a direct instead of a card and a pk}
And again, I am not excusing Carmelo... but the action was bench directed.
    - I think Thomas trying to do something to get some passion and pride back into that sorry team.
    - the penalty will be more than 5 games, Stern isnt going to let NBA discipline get out of his grasp

Glad to see the NBA doing the right thing. You've got to follow the precedent set, even when you have the stars involved. The Nuggets are really gonna miss Carmelo, being in 7th position in the West....but here's a lot of basketball to be played.

Good on Stern and the NBA. There was some justice done inspite of my cynicism.

Here's a phrase that other muppets might consider using some day: I WAS WRONG!

Quit giving this type of conduct the attention it is begging for. Just one of many reasons I am disenchanted with professional basketball. I probably gave up forever a while ago.

Food for thought: I can't think of one NBA player who would be a better example than Brian McBride. I'm a McBride fan, but not the biggest one. I can't think of one NBA player who would be a better example than Heidar Helguson either.

Sorry, didn't mean to throw some Fulham references into your non-Fulham related thread.

I can name a few NBA players who are good role models:

    Grant Hill
    Adonal Foyle
    Dikembe Mutombo
    Steve Nash
    Derek Fisher
    Marcus Camby
    Dwayne Wade
    LeBron James
    Emeka Okafor

There are a number of good guys out there in the NBA, but unfortunately, fights and other negative things from players like this fight, spoil for the players are genuinely positive role models and assets on the off the floor.

Im being called crazy on this but if I was Stern I would suspendMelo one season, Nate Robinson 40 games and JR Smith 40 games. It maybe a bit harsh but I bet the players will think before they do something stupid.

I can see why you're being called 'crazy'.

That would be way beyond the actual seriousness of the event and only appropriate if Carmelo had gotten him down and beat him repeatedly in the face.
    {By the way... Melo's 'cowardice' has no bearing in the decision, nor should it}

But the bottom line is that Stern's credibility as arbiter and czar of the game, would have become seriously undermined if he did that.

I see the suspension as being arbited down to 10 games, by the way.

I was upset over Thomas not being specifically addressed, and Karl should be made to have his involvement justified too, but, on second thought, think the $500,000 fines are meant to address that.

Isiah Thomas is the biggest $h1t I've ever seen. As a New Yorker, I am completely disgusted by him and James Dolan's handling of the Knicks. It's a disgrace, they;'ve ruined my fabulous team. The last time they went to the playoffs they were below .500 and got the 8th seed! That was like two years ago. And they got swept by the Nets. Duck Folan!
