    For what?

They'll probably play someone... if I only wanted a Buckeye showcase, I'd go for that, too.
Has anyone checked to see if Boise State wants to play Ohio State... I did.

    Idaho paper

Faint yearning, if i've ever seen it!

Let me make it clear.... it wouldnt bother me a bit, from a dispassionate viewpoint, to see OSU play Michigan again. Ohio State would likely win again.. by even more.

Glendale is NOT a 'neutral site', any more than Cleveland or Cincinnati would be.

Michigan did indeed play in Columbus but they had a definite psychological boost from Bo's death.

But Florida would be a better more interesting game.. and easier for Ohio State to win.

How many Michigan players on that field do you really feel cared one way or the other about Bo? Do you think the death of a legend is going to motivate a bunch of "student-atheletes" during this day and age?

And why when everyone spent all week last week saying that if USC beat UCLA it should defiinitely have the right to face OSU instead of Michigan doing so, should a USC loss mean that Florida is more appropriate than Michigan?

Just proof that the polls, the BCS and the "national championship" is bunk.

Don, it's BUNK no matter how it's done.
And playoffs aint going to change that.

The BCS ranking IS better than anything else in determining who are the better teams. Purely human ranking is ALSO crap... look at the 2 knuckleheads who kept voting for WVU for # 1.

Look at the basketball season just starting.. those games hardly mean ANYTHING. Why? Because, even more so than the NBA, it only matters how you play from the middle of the season on.

Why? Because Conference play doesnt start till then, and there's always the NCAA tournament to get you the attention you want.. and who can say, with a straight face, that the winner of NCAA tournament is the 'BEST TEAM?'

There's a few that coincide, like the vaunted Wooden UCLA teams... but how many others?

No, I DO NOT WANT an open field playoff... UNLESS it's limited to the top 4 or five teams, based on BCS rankings.

And no, it's not because I dont think OSU couldnt make it.. if anyone can win ugly and survive, it's Tressel's boys.

    As to your first paragraph:
    I'm amazed..

    Heh.. called it!
    The Coaches got serious.

The ESPN gang points out that Urban Meyer got his first exposure to coaching as a grad assistant at OSU {he recruited Herbstreit} and that Florida is almost a doppleganger of the 02 Buckeyes.

-Also that Troy Smith faces a problem if he wins Heisman, past winners didnt have especially good games. Herbie says that if anyone can ignore that, it's Smith.

Petty, I do not think your viewpoints are valid or justified one bit in this scenario. Your team is in the title game. If Ohio State was shunned and did not make it I think you would feel much differently. You make it sound so simple and clear cut that Florida is the choice.

YES, a playoff would make a difference. The reason it would is because Michigan, Ohio State, Florida, USC, LSU and probably even an 11-1 Wisconsin team would get to play and actually decide the national championship on the field. What a novel idea...

As for your idea that games at the beginning of the season won't matter with a playoff, you are on crack. Only teams with one or two losses would likely make it in an eight team playoff.

The other thing is this..there are 64 teams in the NCAA basketball championship...in college football there would be eight or maybe sixteen.

My last point....if Florida is the clear cut #2 team in the country, why did it take the voters until today to push them ahead of Michigan in both polls? They were not that convincing yesterday in their win over Arkansas. A suspect Arkansas team might I add.

The bottom line is that national championships should be decided on the field, not by voters and dumbasses like Brusnton Buckner who was on ESPN trying to justify his decision for Florida when he did not even know who Florida lost to.

I hope Ohio State beats Florida 100-0. Fuck Florida, Fuck the BCS and Fuck all the voters who changed their vote for the simple fact that Michigan did not play the last two weeks. Had Michigan played a cupcake or two the last two weeks, it would be Michigan-Ohio St.

There was a big shift in the coaches poll this week from last, according to ESPN.. And they THINK it was due to Fla winning the conference.

Hey.. like I said, I dont care if they DO go to a playoff. THIS year i have confidence OSU could handle it.

You might be right about Ohio State being able to handle it, but in all honesty, Ohio State is not the factor here at all. I think this whole thing is a joke and I would be saying the same think if Michigan had made it in.

I think we need a little historical perspective... it wasnt that long ago that the national champion was named before the first bowl game was played.

It was mostly writer/coach polls plus some simplistic math for strength of conference scheds

Tom on the world news thread on Bolton:
Well, it has already started.. some 'experts' are advocating a 16 team playoff!
    SIXTEEN!!!!

Great... then we could have moaning from MAC 2nd and 3rd place teams that they werent included.

Crazy idea that would NEVER work:

Take all the no loss or 1 loss teams in the top 25 each season and let them have a playoff. Of course number of teams and games would change accordingly, but no respectable 2 loss team would claim they should be national champs.

What about the team that lost two games, by total of 10 points, to others that ended up in top 5?

    See what I mean?

You cannot make a playoff for only one loss teams and you could not make a playoff system where the number of teams and games changes every season. That would never fly.

All the NCAA has to do is look at D1-AA and D3 football as a system that works with a playoff. Follow that model. I am not sure I understand the problem.

The problem is that it has been convoluted for so long, the easy answers seem nonsensical.

Top 4 playoff. End of discussion.

I say top 8, but my guess is we will see 4 before we see 8. Anything where things are decided on the field works for me.
