Another decision for 'the good of the sport'

Anyone who's ever worked with pine trees knows how pine tar looks and feels and that it attracts dirt, starting with just being sticky but clear.

And it wasnt made a big deal for the above reason; plus StL may be doing the same, but less obvious.

This was definitely a cover-up. Rogers looked as guilty as they come. I was surprised nothing was done about this.

To his credit, he pitched well without the gunk on his hand in the second through the eighth innings. The question is...should he have been booted out before the second inning? My answer..yes, he should have been kicked out if he was using illegal substances on the ball.

I think you're both missing the cogent point. By doing the close up, followed by the circling, followed by the commentary, FOX was making themselves the story instead of the game being the story.

In any case, I don't think there was anything that would have gotten anyone kicked out or to have "brought the game into disrepute." What DID bring the occasion into disrepute was the 3-minute commercial for FOX's sponsor Chevy in the guise of a song by John Mellencamp. The ultimate in product placement while 45,000 people sat and shivered in Comerica Park.

    Good game, though ... huh?

I agree, Don--the Almighty Dollar rules the day, especially when it comes to Fox. No network is more possessed with self-promotion and commercial ties than Fox, including Rupert Murdoch's recent purchase of MySpace, one of the most popular websites in the world. While I don't mind the stadium naming rights and the advertisements all over the park, I get sick of seeing endless promos for "Bones," "Prisonbreak," and "The O.C.," all of which are brought to you by the highest bidder.

That being said, I've enjoyed this postseason almost as much as last year's (when my beloved 'Stros made the World Series, a sweep by a far superior team notwithstanding), and have enjoyed watching Kenny Rogers (a.k.a. "MacGuyver;" looks just like Richard Dean Anderson) help push the Tigers with his intensity and experience.

Come on, Rogers wasn't putting the stuff on the ball. If you're going to doctor the ball, you're not going to put the stuff right on your throwing hand and and then make sure it gets dirty so that it can be seen. Gaylord Perry wrote a book that spent a lot of time talking about where a pitcher can hide the stuff, and it's not that hard. Also, Rogers has never been accused of doctoring the ball before last night. Whatever he had, it was probably something to help him grip the ball in the cold, and if that's it, he's far from the only one. As you mentioned, it didn't hurt him to wash it off, either.

This is an example of media overkill, led by Fox, who blew this so out of proportion. I guess it's not exciting enough to talk about how well Rogers pitched. I'm guessing part of it is that New York media crowd is still upset he didn't pitch well for the Yankees and Mets in the postseason but he is pitching well for Detroit.

On the Chevy commercial -- oops, the pregame song -- my wife noticed that too. Hey, Bud's never been subtle. Next, they'll sell the word "God" in God Bless America to the highest bidder.

Go to CNN SI (CNN CSI?) and tell me it is more than coincidence that he has the same smudge on the same part of his same hand three times at least throughout this season. He's using something, maybe it's just dirt, but he's using it.

I agree that the pictures and the way the substance on his hand looked very suspicious. It's impossible to prove anything though and he still pitched a monster game after wiping the stuff off.

It's one of those things that if the Cardinals lose, people will look at that incident and make a big deal of it. If they win (and I sure hope they do as I'm a lifelong Cardinals fan) then no one will care.
