A UK paper (the Mirror) is reporting this morning that we are going to make a bid for Clint Dempsey. I know he is a striker for New England Revolution, is he any good? What do people think?

It the purchase of US players a cynical ploy to increase the US fan base?

    RE: Who

I doubt the purchase of any American player to the Premiership is a cynical ploy to increase a club's stature in the US. Die-hard soccer fans in the US will notice and might follow the team's exploits, but it's doubtful they will become full-time fans of the team, The majority of Americans will go who? (when asked about the player or the team he is going to)

The big reason European teams look at America talent is because our players are getting better and they can be bought on the cheap. More bang for buck than their European counterparts.

As for Clint, you can find a couple of threads around here about him or mention him. Just look for the orange/yellow higligt of Dempsey's name.

Here's bigsoccer's take (warning, Bigsoccer has tendency to spout a lot of BS and stray off topic):
    Another Dempsey Rumor

Can Anyone Confirm Coleman Spotted This Weekend Looking at Demspey?

Of course, Clint has his own website: www.clintdempsey.com

Hopefully, you can find all you need to know about him from these links.

My opinion of him in short, he's a good player, will work hard wherever he goes, and has no fear on taking on opposition players. His temper and lack of muscle will hurt him in Europe. But I think he can overcome both shortcomings and would be a decent addition to any mid-table team. He will have his growing pains, however.

This from Yanks-Abroad mailbag column. I think it makes sense.

"First of all, I hardly think that it is a lock that Dempsey is gone. MLS has clearly shown in the past that it will not part with its marquee players easily and Dempsey is easily one of the more recognizable faces of the league.

While Chris Coleman was recently spotted scouting the Texas native, it would take quite a transfer offer to pry him from the vise that is MLS.

I think he is gone. Dempsey's contract is running out (I think it ends sometime next year, not positive on when) and he's made it clear he is not renewing it. If MLS wants to make any decent money off of him, it would make sense to sell him in the January window.

I really hope this happens, if it dosn't happen I still want Dempsey in Europe. Athletico Madrid was also rumored to be in for Dempsey.

I honestly believe that Inamoto was purchesed purely to raise the profile of FFC in Japan, although I must confess the US players question was more a bait, if you look at the players FFC have had:

Eddie Lewis: Good player, never got a proper go. Doing well for Leeds.
Marcus Hannaman: Reliable, good for Reading, tough against Maik Taylor and EVDS.
Carlos: Plays anywhere he is asked, gives 100% and is a solid performer.
    Brian Mc: To draw.

    Hi DCHeather,

Thanks for the links. I have had a look round and it seems like he is rated. The artical appeared in the mirror and it reasonably accurate.

Of all the American players in MLS, Dempsey is the one guy I think could be a solid EPL player right now, so I'd be delighted if Fulham picked him up.

Dempsey seems to have the one characteristic which often seems lacking in American players, and that is some real flair and creativity. I've heard others attribute this to the fact that Demspsey learned and played the game on dirt lots, on the proverbial "street," rather than being merely a technically skilled but uncreative product of youth soccer. He's one of those guys who just has a knack for finishing.

This would be a good move, IMNSHO (in my not-so-humble opinion).

I saw this on clubcall yesterday and got pumped up. If this happens he and Bullard next year would be sick and he would almost certainly have an instant impact this season in the MF. Check out his myspace....

I really like Clint Dempsey as a player. I think he works hard, has talent and style and gives it his all. I'd love to seem him at Craven Cottage in the future.

From what I can tell, he's bound and determined to leave the MLS and I think it will happen either in January or at the start of the next EPL season.

    A Fulham hip-hop jam anyone? :)

If so, he better kip the hip-hop-hooray shit to a minimum. This team is about guts, not the proclaimed size of one players nutz.

Lol. A rap about Fulham would seem somewhat out of place to me... Besides, look what it did for the USMNT :(

Rap has a histroy in English football. Former Liverpool god and England flop John Barnes had his hand in two awful raps, the Anfield rap and he also rapped in the middle section of an England world cup song call The World In Motion by New Order.

I hope Mr Dempsy is considerably better at rapping than Barnes.

Part of the last S.A. Spurs NBA championship celebrations was Tony Parker rapping in French.

There's also an Indian restaurant that HatterMom and I frequent that has a [Hindi? Urdu?] rap number in their recycling "mood music." Ahhh, American culture. The world is so lucky to have it.
