Anytime a conservative points out that socialism doesnt work, not even market-based socialism, Liberals point out Sweden as an example of where it does work.

At which point, the rational conservative would typically be advised to just say no it doesnt and walk away... because outwardly it looked like it did work,.

The 'High Suicide Rate' statistic used by some is debunked by others.**

The tax rate, often used as argument, is not really all that high - still less than 50%.. and the reason given for voter's acceptance of it is the government's openness about fiscal details.

But sooner or later, any government function is going to be tempted to 'polish the pig'.. the 'pig' being Sweden's unemployment rate. And there's long been anecdotal evidence that, statistics aside, young Swedes entering the job market see little future for themselves.

    Crazy for Work
. Note that while this is 'anecdotal', thus suspect as it may or may not be representative, the facts surrounding it are not emotion-based.

Now the young in Sweden have evidently had enough... they voted in a 'center-right' faction, largely on domestic issues.

All the more amazing considering that, inevitable in any state where one party dominates for so long, the party and the state apparatus are essentially the same.
    Party Central

** I suspect there is a very thick coat of high gloss pig-wax in there but, not having age demographics, cannot say for sure.

I never met a liberal who cited Sweden as proof that socialism works. I never met a liberal who wants socialism here. Every liberal I know just wants a fairer, more just, and more equal society.

You really need to get a time machine and go back 120 years or so and debate all this with HG Wells. The only people touting socialism as a cureall to anything are the little shadow people right-wingers create just to debunk.

Agreed. But............. I often here people cite Sweden as a place that has a higher quality of living than the United States. Not sure I agree with that. I've read about the problems in Sweden a few times and it seems to me overrated. Election results the other day reflect that Sweds want change. That said I'd still love to visit Sweden and other Scandinavian countries. Read a Bill Bryson books which said that in fact Denmark has better looking women then Sweden. I'd like to judge for my self

If you are going to make a trip to the Scandinavian countries and check out the girls, I would suggest making a quick stop in Poland. I would venture to guess that Polish women are easily the most beautiful women in Europe and possibly the world. I might be biased as my wife is Polish, but there are some lovely ladies from Poland.

I would say the most attractive people in Europe are the Czechs. Just my two cents.

Well I don't want to make it sound as if I'm a pervert and that's would be the sole reason for traveling to Europe but it would not be honest to say that its not a benefit of traveling. I don't know much about Poland but it seems like a nice enough place. I'd be glad to go there some time, prolly alot cheaper than Scandinavia.

I don't know, Spencer, that was pretty much the sole reason I went for the first time when I was 19! Poland wasn't an option then, though.

Spencer, I am going to Poland at Christmastime for two weeks. I will scout the talent out and the lay of the land for you!! LOL!!

If you ever do consider going to Poland, let me know. If you do not have the luxury of going to Poland and want to meet and see Polish women, come to my neighborhood in Chicago. English is the second language where I live. And let me tell you there are loads of hotties from Poland walking about.

My wife's cousin moved to Poland for his girl. That's some powerful..., ahem, stuff.

    Isn't Paulina Poroskova(sp?) from Poland?

I am not going to be moving. In fact, there is no need to move when I have more Polish people in the Chicagoland area than any other place in the world outside of Warsaw, the capital.

Czech women have very similar features to Polish women so they are nice as well. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with most of the women in the former Eastern bloc of the world. Must have been something about communism that made the women beautiful!! Just kidding!

This is the best evolution of what began as a right-wing rant I've seen in a long time.

Props to Spencer for getting us on what is undoubtedly the right track, :D and mega-props to Tom who is on the verge of getting me to move to the shores of Lake Michigan.
