It's a little late for summer re-runs. This is getting to be like last year.

I can't say that I am shocked. Sigh. Maybe a halftime rally? I'm going to have to go with keep it under 3 goals as to not make it more embarassing.

If the results hold now, the Premiership will go 7-3-2 (7 wins, 3 losses, and 2 draws) in this week's Carling Cup matches. I suspect if each team played its top lineup (or close to it), the aggregate record would not be anywhere near 7-3-2.

Is it time for the Premiership teams to bow out of the Carling Cup? They have too many other games (including internationals for many Premiership players) to take it too seriously. I think having the FA Cup is enough for the Premiership teams. There are only about 5,000 fans at the Cottage tonight (some for as little as 1 pound), so it's not a big moneymaker. It could be remade as a Football League competition only, and it would be a big deal for the Football Leauge teams (and therefore TV and the fans) as the winner would get a spot in Europe that they might not otherwise have a chance at.

Yeah, but that's Boro. They haven't done anything of note since their first match, and they may be in deep trouble this season.

We better right this ship in the second half, or we're in pretty deep ourselves.

    Where the hell is Tom?

We lose 2-1. From the sounds of the crowd, many of the 5K people there are happy Wyncombe fans.

GJ was lamenting that this loss was bad for momentum for Chelsea. I disagree--I think it doesn't matter one way or another. We had so many subs in there and it's clear we were willing to lose this game to save our players for the Premiership. If a player allows a game against Wyncombe to affect him in a game against CHELSEA, we have a problem. Given our injury problem, it may be good that we're out of this competition--our players can use the rest.

The League Cup has been a tough sell since it started as the Milk Cup. For the first few years, many of the Division 1 teams didn't participate. It was only after they stopped doing a home-and-home final and moved the last match to Wembley that folks started taking it seriously.

When the FA hijacked the 1st division from the Football League, I thought the League Cup was dead, for sure. It is losing interest with teams and players, but so has the FA Cup. Each of these is the result of foreign managers and players whose home country doesn't take their FA or League Cup seriously.

I like it, because there's a chance to do well in the lower rounds and build up a winning feeling. Didn't happen today, though.

I should have worn my shirt!

I am more worried about what chelski are going to do to our starting 11 than this loss. I hope we don't get carved up like the Man United game.

Good points, HD. I guess my question is if the Premiership clubs were not in the League Cup, might they take the FA Cup more seriously.
