Considering the TV ratings Stateside, as well as the high quality and drama of some of the matches, I'd say it's an almost total success (poor refereeing aside).
The Cup rekindled the long-burning football fever fire in my heart (how's that for drama? ha!) and is what led me to investigate the EPL, and, in turn, choose Fulham as my personal favorite side! So personally and on a more international level, I'd call it a success!

    Ditto...
Lots of high drama, excellent coverage and comment in the states.

Everyone that should be in is in.. and no overacheivers into the semi's, all teams playing fairly good guts-and-attack footy...it doesnt get any better.

I have to demur. I've been very disappointed. Here you have the greatest talent in the world -- players, coaches, referees -- and we've seen so much cynicism, so much negative play, it's been disheartening. I'm afraid that the good stuff that I've seen -- Argentina's winning goal against Mexico, Schwartzer's amazing save, Brazil's creative counterattacking, Dempsey's goal -- has only stood out in stark contrast to the diving, yellow card waving, and 4-5-1 nonsense that, for me, has been emblematic of this World Cup.

I was hoping for the Beautiful Game, for me and my soccer-deriding friends. What I got was bad Telanovella. It has done nothing to burnish the view of soccer on this side of the Atlantic.

I hope it'll get better -- the refereeing certainly has, but I'm afraid i'm the 20% that says "no."
