I actually picked the Italians to move on, but those pesky boys from down under are putting up a fight.

Tied at '75, and Italy is playing a man down since '50.

    Very interesting.

Penalty at 90' + 3 minutes. No way!

    Totti scores on the PK.

Sorry Socceroos, that had to be tough.

My apologies to anyone who taped the match. I forgot all about the necessary World Cup etiquette. I think, hope, that Tom caught it in time with the requisite [R].

I did not put the result [r] in the thread.

Tell me, was the penalty justified?

I thought it was and I did want Italy to win, just because of Toni and Totti...I could care less for the rest of them. I've never been a huge fan of Australia!

I'm leaning towards no, Neill was was on the ground didn't move and then he trips (dives) over him. However, the Italians were outplaying the Aussies and had a player that was unfairly sent off. Maybe it evened things? :?

I was wondering same as Tom, as I am following from work. Awfully fishy that it happens in extra time, but I have not seen anything to refute Mike's view.

Don't know if anyone saw it, but Schwartzer pulled off a save around 22 minutes that was as beautiful in its way as the Argentine goal yesterday. Man, none of these guys studied physics in school, did they?

Sorry for the socceroos. The diving continues into the next round.

I'm going to watch this tonight after DV-R'ing it but I think alot of people might be suspect of this just because it happened in the last minute of injury time. We'll see I guess...

I'll admit, I was going for Italy in this match, but only because of my immense hatred for Guus Hiddink. Grosso did look like he made a big deal out of Neill's challenge, though. This is a match that the Aussies could have won in extra-time. A tough exit for them indeed.

Okay, I have watched the replay of this penalty at least ten times now and I do not think it was a penalty. Yes, Lucan Neill was on the ground, but other than just laying on the ground, he did nothing to bring the Italian go down. Looked more like a dive than a penalty. I feel bad for Australia that they had to go out that way.

Which brings us to the age old question..."If an Aussie falls, and an Italian is the only one to fall over him, is it a penalty?"

Okay, maybe not that age old.

Speaking of refs' poor calls and diving -- WHERE ARE ERIC CANTONA AND HIS THUGS????

I thought they were going to make football beautiful again, play wiz choy, honooorrrrr . . .

Oh, yeah, I forgot: they get paid by Nike and Adidas is the major sponsor!

I will definitely say the better team won the match. Italy was the better team and has a real chance of making it to the semi-finals with a with over Ukraine on Friday.
I just hate to see a game decided like that. Oh well though.

I am sick and tired of these dives. The Italians in particular. There giving the game a bad name.
