Beckham

    For all of the naysayers of David Beckham out there (there are a lot), he stepped up today and scored a beautiful free kick to help England advance to the quarter-finals on Saturday.

    While it must be said that Beckham is not the best player in the world as many non-soccer fans believe, he is a great player and I was really happy for him to put that free-kick in today for England.

    If there is anyone that has more pressure put on him by fans and media from all over the world, I would like to see the evidence. People say Beckham does not show up in the big games, but he did today and was the only reason a shoddy England team even advanced today.

    Props to Beckham and I hope he gets the praise he deserves over the next few days and I am hoping he delivers again on Saturday.

    One last England note, what is the deal with Lampard? I have seen him have 5-10 chances this World Cup only to sail shots high, wide and everywhere but in the goal. He always seems to finish when playing for Chelsea, but for England he has been poor finishing. I just do not get it.

    That free was the only thing he did and the goalkeeper Mora should have stopped it.

    I think you're harsh on both Beckham and Mora. I thought both had very good games, especially so considering that Beckham was obviously sick. The free kick was a blinder and Mora was dead meat the moment leather met leather.

    As for Lampard, as we used to say in the military .. WTFO? Rooney and Garrard set him up for what should have been a hattrick and he didn't get anything on frame.

    My time to bitch: Our redneck local ABC affiliate evidently decided, as did MLS earlier this year, that the only soccer fans in SA are Mexicans, so they spent the entire match time showing televangelist programs. So what did I do, turned to Univision and watched. I can pick up a little spanish, but not at 160 mph, so I was a little at a loss for some of the commentary. :?:

    And the sucky thing about it is that it was listed in the paper for ABC, and the affiliate didn't run any graphics advising of tape delay or anything. They just never expected any Christian Anglos to want to watch soccer, since it's an evil foreign thing.

    Okay; too much ranting for Sunday. Let's see if I have to go to Berlitz to watch the Portugal v. Holland match. :D

    That free kick was the only thing anyone on either team did all day and fortunately for England, it went in.

    I think the media spends too much time ripping Becks than simply appreciating the things he does well. As I said before, he is not one of the best players in the world, but he is above average and plays his role on the team well.

    Last, but not least, remember this.....Beckham has played a part in seven of England's last eleven World Cup goals. Whether he scored, assisted or was part of the build up to free someone to score, Beckham has played a big part for England. Like it or not, you cannot argue with the facts.

    At times I think Beckham would be even more effective in the middle of the park with Lennon causing problems on the right, but I doubt Sven would switch his position. We will see though.

    Uhh, actually, having watched matches in both languages (the latest in my EXTREMELY limited Spanish I picked up was "en vivo"), it's not bad to watch in a language you don't understand. That way, when they are talking in cliches (gasp! they do that in other languages?!?), you can easily tune them out (Yes, I AM old enough to realize that a "knock-out" round is different from a round-robin. . . ) At least Tommy Smyth can be funny ("back o' de old onion bag!")

    I have to agree. When I'm bored I'll listen to 606 on BBC Radio Five Live and the two things all the callers, and sometimes the presenters, say anytime England plays bad is 1. Sven is bad and 2. bench Beckham, Terry for Captain.

    Yeah, he's not the greatest ever, but Beckham is good, and he's always expected to play the role of superhero every match England plays. And even when the other players don't play well first line of thouhts is usually something like "well if Beckham weren't in there we could have...". Noone mentions the other 10 players.

    eh, whatevs. England advanced today thanks to Beckham.
