    {Note: These copy/paste nicely into a spreadsheet for future reference}

Sort of an eye-opener, if you hadnt considered it in a while..

Lends new import into noises about big name players going to MLS
Or why players see MLS as a stepping stone to Euro clubs.

Minor quibble on the Times' article... linking Valderrama and Matteus!!!!

Couldnt be any more different in impact... or in mindset, on arrival.

Came from the parent club last year, to shore them up... dominated, along with Garcia who came at same time.. in his first game, at the MetroStars.

So what does this show us kids??

That Rio Ferdinand makes more in one week than 80% of these players make all year.

Well it tells me that dollar for dollar I'll take Jimmy Conrad over Rio Ferdinad any day. I wonder what Ryan Nelsen made at DC the year before he went to Blackburn. I doubt its anymore than the 115K a year Conrad makes.

MLS is full of quality bargins if you scratch the surface.

Well, I don't know about that. I think I'd take Les Ferdinand over most of what I see in MLS. There is a lot of quality here in MLS, although the coaching isn't anywhere near any major European league. Granted, there are a dozen or so MLS folks that could make a squad in the Championship, but I don't know how many more Nelsens and Eliots there are left that could play in the Prem. Clint Dempsey? And, in a year or two, Marvell Wynne.

Well theres really little to base that coaching argument on. Maybe your right maybe your wrong, theres really no way to know. Could Steve Nicol cut it in the CCC,SPL, or EPL. No idea, he's never tried.

As for players I'm a little more optimistic. I'd say every team in the leauge excluding Salt Lake has a minimum of five players who could cut it in the CCC or higher. No one really regarded Elliot as a markee player and he fits in fine in the EPL.

I read a quote from Youri Dorjkeff a while ago in which he said of MLS , Somtimes its like a European 1st divison game and somtimes its like a 3rd division game. I tend to agree. Major problem is the competition format. When the games matter there usally worth watching.

I saw an excellent exhibit of that last night when the Crew played the Wizards...
    Schmid did two things:

He had the players attempt to advance the ball through the midfield by passing, not hoofing it over
    and
he had the players going for the ball, not establishing zone control against possible counters

While the passing attempts were usually unsuccessful...since the team only fielded 2 field players that were here, last year... at least they were gaining confidence that they could get the passes off against the more coherent midfield of the Wizards.
And they WENT to the ball, ESPECIALLY if they had just lost possession, rahter than regrouping into a 'zone-control'

This kept KC off-balance and resulted in The crew having many more chances and the majority of possession.
Never mind that a lapse resulted in a score on a counter, never mind we cant get a target man clear and finish... it worked all night against a team that had beat us 3-1 a few weeks before and we looked worse than even that score indicated.

The 'steal the ball' paradigm should be obvious to anyone who has played or followed much as it's how you beat a better more skillful player or team...

That Sigi has the Crew doing BOTH at the same time is REALLY thrilling me.

Is that why some MLS matches are painful to watch? I've seen some matches that remind me of the games played on sunday mornings in London, except the uniforms are nicer.

And to think that Johnny Haynes was the first 100 quid a week player in the UK. In those days, that would have been about $280 or less than 15K a year. The average weekly industrial wage when he got that wage was about 20-25 quid, and a good pint would cost you the equivalent of about 4 "new pence," so there's a cost of living angle also. But still.

I love how you equate the price of beer in a country to the cost of living, Don.

Question for those in the know, I remember reading about Beckham's image rights at Real were 50%. Is this common for the stars of the game? Couldn't this be a equalizer for the MLS? If this is such a large amount of their contracts, could MLS give a much greater % to the player and pay less out of pocket? I know it worked with Beckham, but would it work with a top Mex league player (a national team player that could sell to the latinos in the US). Or am I just pissing in the wind?

P.S. Any insight into how contracts are structured differently in Mex or
    South American leagues would help.
