From the Washington Post, Wednesday April 5th:

"The club has tentative plans to play an exhibition (Wednesday) July 19 at RFK Stadium against an international opponent to be determined. World power FC Barcelona had expressed interest in playing United in August at FedEx Field, but a deal couldn't be reached."

    I hope it's Fulham...

Dave, I heard rumours Fulham were due to play a pre-Season game in NY or DC, so putting 2 and 2 together.....maybe July 19 is the answer!

Would give me a reason for a road trip as well...was planning on NYC for the holidays, but a couple weeks after my 23 B-day sounds grrrrrreat! Maybe I'll have my thumbs in my new thumb hole jersey....i'll go for the short sleeve version!

It would have been nice to see Ronaldinho play against DC United. Oh well, hopefully, it will be Fulham for July 19th.

Hey, maybe Fulham will put in an outrageous bid in for Ronaldinho for the summer and I'll get to see them both. :3d smile:

From today's Wasington Post soccer chat:

Reston, Va.: Any inkling of what European team DC United is trying to line up?

Steven Goff: United will play a friendly at RFK on July 19, opponent TBA. They are trying to line up a European opponent. (I have been assured that it will not be Firpo, FAS, Aguila, Municipal or any other Central American club.)

There's also an outside chance of a big name coming in August to FedEx, but that's a ways from being finalized. Barcelona had been mentioned, but that died weeks ago. (Barca will play in Houston, LA and NY in early August.)

BTW, the Post's soccer coverage is pretty good. Goff does chats every two weeks and they have started a World Cup blog.

Mike, does any of this jibe with anything you've heard through the grapevine?

Yes it does Dave. From what I heard Fulham is either playing in New York or DC in middle of July. There is also a small chance they will do both matches but most likely just the one.

I'm personally hoping for New York (since its close and I would throw a party at my house, but thats here nor there) but if the match is in DC, I'm making plans for a mini-bus trip to the capitol.

Bummer news from the Washington Post World Cup blog. Hopefully it won't happen:

    Celtic and Liverpool to Washington?

    Goff here....

D.C. United is in talks with both Celtic and Liverpool about friendlies at RFK this summer.

If they reach a deal, United would play Celtic on July 19 and Liverpool on August 2.
Still a VERY LONG WAY to go before a deal is reached on either match, but they are talkin'. They could get both games, they might get just one, just might get neither.

    Stay tuned..

Please, let it be Fulham. *crossing fingers*

But that doesn't bode well that there is not even talks being publicized in the media, yet.

FC Barcelona have set their U.S. Tour dates and they will not be playing DC at all but will be playing the 'Lalas-less' Redbull on August 12th.

This still leaves both teams open to play Fulham in mid-July, although my worry is that Man U., Chelsea and the 'bigger' teams are also planning summer tours.

Manchester United is going to South Africa this summer. Chelsea is coming to the States and are the likely opponents of the MLS All-Stars here in Chicago in late July, but I am not sure what else is on the itinerary for them.

Bad news from the WP's soccer blog:

DC United officials are getting closer to finalizing a deal for Scottish club Celtic to play United at RFK Stadium on July 12. The original plan was to play on the 19th, but that has changed. United is also hoping to set up a friendly with Liverpool on Aug. 2, but the Celtic negotiations have moved further along.
