Instead of angering Pettyfog, I decided to move my response to AmericanMike here.

Mike, it's tough to explain my feelings for DC. The best I can do is say that its a Love, Hate relationship. Its home to beautiful homes, parks, museums, the Library of Congress (which should be at the top of the list everyone's tour guide of DC--my favorite, with the OEOB a close second, building in DC).

Now the hates...I hate the traffic, plain and simple. Also, there is a large number of people who upon meeting them will ask you, "Who do you work for?" Not the typical what do you do for living? It's all about power and status for too many people in this city, and there is nothing else to them. And there is a certain blandness to this city, I can't really explain it, I think it has to do with the fact that a number of people who live in this city are just passing through--they stay for a few years and then leave without much ties to the city.

Heather is more in the political sector. I'm in the civil service sector (Census Bureau), and there, it's more like the real world; it is more "What do you do?", not who you work for.

I love DC. I've been here for 20 years and about a year ago had a very, very tempting job offer to move back to Michigan, where I grew up. My wife and I (she's lived here about 20 years, too) seriously considered it, but we decided we love DC too much. (Plus, we had just gotten the Nats and had great season ticket seats--we couldn't give that up!)

Probably the thing I love about DC is that I meet people from all over the country, and the world. DC attracts smart people from everywhere, and that makes it a great place. (The downside is that it also makes it a real Type-A place, which relates to hte traffic that Heather mentioned. I don't hvae as much trouble with traffic as her, but I do have more than I'd like, although after a week in the parking lot known as Florida, I'd take DC any day.)

DC is too cold in winter and too hot in summer. The weather is nice for about two weeks in April and two weeks in October. There is way too much traffic and the people have been described pretty well.

I do miss it sometimes though, couldn't tell you what though.
