Last week the media attacked the NYY baseball fans for booing Mariana Rivera (sp?) and accussed them of having no class. Seeing as many of them paid hard earned cash - and probably a considerable sum - is it not their right to boo even the most heroic of players? I understand that because of Manu the yankees have won several rings and I also understand that its upsetting to him. but who the Fcuk cares? He earns millions of dollars for throwing a little ball and these people work 50 hour weeks in delis, offices, garages, hospitals etc, pay massive taxes and still find the money to support their team. Maybe I am wrong, but so long as I pay to watch you work a few hours a week kicking/throwing/hitting a ball then I reserve the right to boo you when you consistently underperform. God knows, my clients boo when I do a shite job.

I agree Glen! I think if you pay the price of admission you can boo players all you want. I do have a problem though with fans that like to get personal and get nasty to players on the field, pitch, etc.

Some fans go into stadiums and think they deserve the right to do whatever he/she wants to do. However, swearing, talking about the player's mother, wife, kids, etc is completely unneccesary and wrong! The whole fracas in Detroit earlier this season in the NBA was created by fans.

Another example of fans obviously going overboard was in Milan yesterday when the Internazionale fans went crazy throwing flares everywhere. That is just ridiculous.

Fans have certain rights when going to a game and one of those is booking. They should be allowed to show their displeasure with a player or the entire team. However, when fans go over the line, then I have a major problem with things.

Leagues need to be able to draw a line of right and wrong and punish thoe that go over the line.

But Glen, keep booing if you want! It is your right!

    Cheers!

I personally love to heckle... I usually sit in the outfield at Twins games (after being a snobbish season ticket holder for three years... darn good seats, but too many boring folks around me) and love to make snide comments about the opposing teams players. Don't get me wrong, I leave their mothers and families out of it... but I do like to remind of them of past... shall we say, indiscretions... lawsuits, bad games, bad seasons, bad teams...

As for booing my own team... been there, done that... Heck, I was at the Fulham v. Blackburn pisser of a match... boo'ed FFC off the field along with the rest of the 17K faithful... as a supporter, I need to let my team know when I'm disappointed with the performace they put on... like Glen said, they're getting millions to play a game... if you can't play it well (even if it's just for that day), I'll let ya know...

    And Glen... great signature line...

I'm a Yanks fan, and I take the side of not booing... its an odd standpoint for me to have. I can't boo Mo Rivera cuz he's the best that has ever had that role and has 4 rings. I can't ask to sqeeze 4 more out of him, I can only dream.

I do however yell at each and every player within earshot of me. Sometimes I tell them i pleasured their mothers... and other times I tell them they have fullblown AIDS. its part of the game for New Yorkers... we have some of the best fans out there, and I know, everyone says that. But we dont have white trash jumping the first base coach, beer throwing at our own players, uppercut throwing guys in the outfield, or other such things. The closest thing i've ever been part of is Albert Bell 1995, Yankee Ball day.... no one seemed to want their ball, but seemed to want to give them to Albert (Joey) Bell.

Boo A-Rod, the man has won nothing and has done next to nothing save 4 extraordinary years on bad teams. He should have gotten one of those blown saves for blowing a double play ball in the clutch. I dont appreciate his presence on the ball club.

i'm an o's fan, and we kicked the yankees ass...haha

anyway, i'm all for booing. at what other point in your life can you boo. I really wish i could though, i'd love to boo my boss when he walks into the office in the morning, but that's not acceptable. you can't boo in a restaraunt if they screw up your order, can't boo in church cause the sermon sucks, can't boo your wife or kids or girlfriend at home, unless you want some trouble.

so watching sports is the only time you can boo, and you can get out all that tension built up from the rest of your lives when you can't boo.

and if you have to boo, boo the damn yankees

    You don't believe in booing
You do like to yell the nastiest things imaginable to players within earshot
You have great fans (including yourself?)
    It's ok to boo A-Rod

You sound very confused. A 4-8 start will do that.
Happy Patriot's Day and say hello to George

Dan was that you punching my boy Gary in the face?? I'm not confused. I went through 17 near terrible seasons with the Yanks before I got my first ring. You on the other hand waited forever. I have sympathy. Winning last year must have been great. Just wait til you can string together 3 in a row. Not likely tho.

I meant that i dont believe in booing Mo. He's done just about everything he could.

I think A-Rod is a half the man he claims to be. He sucks in my mind. I like players who produce... I miss Scott Brosius.

I am a great fan. In fact I scowled when i heard we got A-Rod cuz i knew what kind of player he was. I'll take Aaron Boone over A-Rod any day. I believe a team of role players are glued together by two or three superstars, not the opposite. (1996)

See you in the play offs....

No way it was me, Smokin'. I can't get a seat that close and I don't know how that idiot did. Sheff's not my favorite but I have to take my hat off to him for not clocking the guy.

Your last point is on the mark. Funny how things go. The Sox wanted A-Rod so bad but last year would probably never won it all with him on the team. They get rid of the talented head case - Nomar - bring in three role players and look what happens.

Look at me, I open my spoiled mouth and A-Rod goes 5 for 6 with 6 RBI.

I don't care, I'm more excited about Tino, platoon guy, hitting a grandslam.

    Gonna split hairs, here...

Nothing wrong with booing any player in a professional team. I draw the line at amateur, even college athletics for booing your OWN player..

And NEVER an individual sport player... such as track, tennis or golf, no matter which side. In those cases it's silence that is deadly.
