    Re: Magath Appointed

Arrgggh! Could we have sticked with Rene just a little bit longer?!!!

    http://www.bbc.com/sport/0/football/26200035

    Basically.

    from wiki:
Players gave him nicknames like "Saddam" (Saddam Hussein) or “Quälix”, a rhyming mash of his first name Felix and the German verb “quälen” (to torture).

    Pretty much.

I don't have the words.

Does that mean Wilkins and Curbishley are still there or are they gone as well? I'm not familiar enough with the history of the Prem, but I can't imagine that having 3 managers in the span of one season produces positive results. Do we have anyone that might know how this has gone before? And does anyone know anything more about Magath outside of what Heather has put up there regarding his dictator type nature?

After some semblance of optimism from good efforts the past two matches, my doom and gloom fear has come back... :confusion-helpsos:

From the BBC article Heather linked:

I don't have a problem with this move. Rene would be a fine manager...in the Eredivisie. But his brand of football is sure fire relegation material in the Prem. As for being given enough time, while I certainly agree that he wasn't in the aggregate, he did have enough time to show some semblance of improvement on the defensive end and he failed. You can't park the bus and concede 2.5 per match. Not when every team around us keeps a clean sheet or gives up 1 when they do the same.

I'll have to do some digging on the new guy before commenting. But two plusses jump out. He's not Dutch and he's a disciplinarian. That's the type of guy we should have been looking for when we replaced Jol.

Magath has had success in Germany, including my VfB Stuttgart, but he has a reputation for being a very tough manager in terms of training and conditioning. This may have been what Fulham needed...back when Jol was let go. But now? It's too late for a change like this.

    Damn.
This move should've been made instead of hiring a dude who has never managed.
That said - I am not a fan of Magath. If he performs a miracle and keeps us up - I will happily eat my crow.

I'm having a flashback to an old SNL skit called "The Bizarro World." Except bizarre doesn't begin to cover this move.

We were doomed anyway. This just seals it.

I think I may have found my new signature.

Quite the contrary. I actually have more hope after this. Roy was a disciplinarian and tough in training and conditioning. I don't think Magath is a long term answer, but given where we stand today, we've got more pressing short term concerns. I have zero belief that Meulensteen was going to keep us up.

Didn't take Pulis long to start getting results at Palace. Nor Poyet at Sunderland. Pepe Mel just took over WBA and they held Everton, Pool and Chelsea all to 1-1 draws in his first 5 matches.

I'm not saying we're staying up. But we have a better chance if he halts our shipping 2-3 goals per game.

Listening to Talksport, this has been in the works for a couple of weeks. That would square with the rumors we heard a couple weeks ago. Makes sense timing-wise since we had 10 days between the Liverpool and WBA matches. I don't believe there's another break like that any time soon.

Apparently Magath turned down Hamburg before coming to us.

I agree he's probably not the answer long term. He's never really been consistent with his success except maybe Stuttgart. But then again I think his other German teams were a bit quick in pulling the trigger. Although I think there were rumors of player grumblings being behind it as well, especially Wolfsburg.

Sounds like DiCanio lite to me.

I don't know, doesn't sound any crazier than the stuff we read about Rene before he came on. I kinda like "3. He fined players who made an "unnecessary backpass" €1,000."

Managers are in the motivation game and they invariably try all manner of things in hopes of a response. I bet you could make a list like that for anyone who's ever coached top flight football...especially over 22 years.

    Just saw the news.
    Shock and disappointment.
I thought Rene and the lads had turned a corner.
I will back the manager though - to keep Fulham in the Premier League.
    One thing puzzles me though.
This Wolfgang-Felix Magath character has NO EXPERIENCE IN ENGLISH FOOTBALL.
His entire career has been in Germany.
Meulensteen has 12 years experience of English football.
Also, appreciate the length of the FFC official statement.
They could have put up the usual blurb.
But disappointed Rene wasn't thanked for his efforts.
Something about all this just doesn't feel right...

What the heck? I have a busy morning at the office, finally check my phone at lunch, and this happens?

What in the world is going on in SW6? Whether or not Rene was going to get the job done, this does not bode well.

EDIT: To Westchester's point of something not seeming right....yes, where was the cursory thanks to Rene? Even if they don't mean it. This reads exactly how Rene framed it. Khan is panicking.

Except DiCanio didn't win 3 Bundesliga titles as a manager, or have any experience (if not business) being a top-flight manager to begin with.

Anywho, removing Rene now, and not after Sheffield United or Southampton or any other prior point, is certainly a perplexing move that draws a strong visceral reaction. But look at the woeful underlying number and results. It seems Rene's biggest "pro" was that he wasn't Martin Jol.

We're absolutely reeling right now. If we get relegated you've got to think there'll be hell to pay for Khan.
