AGreen16, are you originally from Sacramento? Just curious since I see you reside in Atlanta. I hate when teams move, I was a LA Rams season ticket holder for the final 5 years they were here, and I remember the final game and going over to the tunnel to watch them leave the field...brutal. What makes it worse for Kings fans is that their owners pissed away their money in other ventures, and even had an agreement to stay, but backed out of it (simply because the Maloofs need the $$ from a sale).

The Maloofs lost their shirts (along with their casino and their beer distributorship) and they no longer have enough money to be NBA owners. They've been pimping the team around the country, looking for a sucker who would put up the money but allow them to remain as owners. They've also been running the team on the cheap the last few years. Close to a championship 10 years ago, now in the cellar. Some aspects remind me of the movie Major League.

The arena is old, and there was a major effort to put together a deal for a new arena. Sacramento Mayor (and former NBA All-Star) Kevin Johnson had a deal in place, but when it was time to start paying for the initial stages, the Maloofs suddenly started raising objections. Weasels of the worst sort.

I've been going to Kings games since they moved to Sacramento in 1985. I was a Cincinnati Royals fan as a kid in Ohio and I moved to Sacramento a year before my Royals did. I have a piece of a season ticket and get 8 games this season. In fact, I saw them beat Cleveland last night. I'll go to the games, but I won't spend any money at the concession stands or in the team store. I figure it's the only way I can support the team while giving as little of my money as possible to those scumbags.

One of the scumbag things the Maloofs did while running the franchise into the ground was to fold the Sacramento Monarchs franchise, claiming they needed to save the money. League champions in 2005, out of existence a few years later.

    Q) Why don't you watch the WNBA any more?

    A) I'm a Sacramento Monarchs fan. I watch all their games.

I agree with what you say sacffc and I do still watch the WNBA. The way way Maura McHugh Tichia and several other players and were treated was outrageous. By the way I listen to the live stream of of KHTK140 as often as I can and I think it is great the Grant Napier is finally coming out with such great support of the Kings staying in sac. I would love to be see the Monarch brought back if its possible. On a more personal note I would love to move to Sac and reside there if you know anyone who is hiring please feel free to give them the following link and contact me. http://www.linkedin.com/in/allegravhgreen

I find myself torn here, folks. If it's possible to empathize and sympathize, I do, honestly. However, if ANY big league sport were to thrive here in Louisville, it would be the NBA, for obvious reasons. To be blunt, if you aren't able to keep your team, they couldn't have a better home than here. I'm sorry bad owners messed things up. I hate it when rich people like the Maloofs screw over a team's loyal fans. The University of Louisville won't like it, but their new home, the KFC Yum! Center, looks, sounds, smells and feels like an NBA arena. They'll fight it tooth and nail, but the reality is it's a good fit. There are many who believe we got screwed when we lost the Kentucky Colonels when the merger happened.

I've never been to Louisville but it seems to be a great basketball town, and I would imagine the region could support an NBA team.

In Sacramento the problem is the owners, not the fan base. This is, I believe, the 21st largest media market in the country, so there are NBA teams in smaller markets. The team had over 500 straight sellouts in the late 90's - early 00's. We just haven't been lucky enough to have owners like they do in San Antonio (to pick a comparably-sized city). Attendance has dropped off over the last few years as the Maloofs let the team deteriorate. This has always been a small-market franchise (Rochester - Cincinnati - Kansas City - Sacramento) and it's tougher going than it is in a major media market, but I have no doubt that the Kings could thrive here once again with new ownership. The fact that there are no other major league teams here and no major colleges also works in the team's favor.

Jump, if the Kings move, it will be to Seattle if the rumors are true, but the scumbag Maloofs are surely trying to find someone else to pay even more). The Starbucks founder Howard Schultz sold the Sonics to a group from OKC thinking they would 'wink, wink' keep the team there (that's his story and he's sticking to it). Two wrongs don't make a right so if some local ownership in Sacramento steps in, I'm in favor of that, even though it's comical that one of the NBA's biggest and most supported cities Seattle (#14 TV market) doesn't have a team. Two cities that have shown that the NBA doesn't work and are in Louisville's region are New Orleans and Memphis

What's the biggest head scratcher is how in the hell do you lose your @ss in the casino and beer distributor business?? It seems you would have to be guilty of mismanagement of the worst sort to go broke. sacffc, you are living in and around the story. Is there anyone locally that has the funds to step in and buy the team? I know Mayor KJ worked tirelessly on a new arena deal, just sucks he had to negotiate with vile human beings like the Maloofs.

You hit the nail right on the head there.

The Sleep Train owner has shown some interest; he's from Sacramento. They bought the naming rights for the arena; last year it was "Power Balance Pavillion" (the Placebo Gazebo) before that company went belly up. Yesterday it was announced that AEG might want to get involved in a deal to put a new arena downtown and revitalize the downtown mall area. So, there's still hope.

I saved the link. Don't know if I can help because I don't have any connections to the Kings or anyone in the sports business. But, you never know ...

We failed to attract the Hornets and the Grizzlies when they moved from Charlotte and Vancouver, respectively. I don't think we really have a shot at them now, either, although you never say never. I failed to mention before that Louisville didn't reach national prominence and be become a national college basketball power until 1980 when they won their first national championship, several years after the Colonels were absorbed. They'll veto any pro franchise at any level, and will probably not be challenged with an override.

I hate to say it... Supersonics are coming back, Charlotte ownership will be trying to re-appropriate the Hornets name with New Orleans becoming the Pelicans... I can't be mad about any of these developments. I miss the Sonics being in the league.

We're celebrating in Sacramento tonight -- the Kings aren't going anywhere. By a 12-0 vote, a subcommittee of the NBA Owners Committee recommended that the Kings remain in Sacramento; the full owners committee of all 30 teams will consider the issue in mid-May.

Would have loved to see the look on those scumbag Maloof's faces when they got that news. Karma is a biiaattcchh. In order to try and save face they gave the city the chance to match the Seattle offer, thinking there was no chance. Sacramento gets it done, then the Maloofs decide to re-open the bidding (for a week), the Seattle group kicks in another $25 million, but the NBA takes a stand against this charade and those two knuckleheads. Of course the next step will be the courtroom so this is just the beginning. sac, have the Maloof's made any type of statement yet up in the local media? What has been the reaction of the populace?

No statements locally from the Magoofs so far.

I think the recent stuff about increasing the bids was primarily an effort by the Magoofs to get more money out of the buyers. it appears that they realized a while ago that the move to Seattle wasn't going to fly, and that they would have to sell to the group Mayor KJ put together, so they were trying to up the price. Good riddance to those turkeys. Now we can get some real owners who want to improve the team instead of siphon off cash.

Some fan reaction from the Kings board I spend time on:

Today's Sacramento Bee had an article in which Mayor Kevin Johnson tells the story of how the city kept the Kings. Needless to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I've talked to a couple of people here about this subject and figured there would be some interest.

As Mayor KJ said, "I didn't win a championship on the court. This is Sacramento winning a championship."

This is a great end to an agonizing story.

FWIW, I always admired KJ. Any NBA superstar who supports live theatre i[as he did while with Phoenix] is alright with me.

Thanks for posting sac, pretty amazing story. I drive through Sacramento every summer to go see family in Oregon and was always struck on the old arena being away from the downtown area. The new arena will revitalize downtown for sure in so many ways. Good for KJ and the others that didn't give up.
