This needs its own thread. Injury bug starting to get worrisome w/Weston & Sargent (he seems like he’s going to be ready, McKennie might not be ready for Wales) joining De La Torre.

    https://sbisoccer.com/2022/10/westo...est-usmnt-players-dealing-with-injuries?amp=1

Was listening to ‘Counter Attack’ w/Meola & Wynalda on Sirius and they are assuming Berhalter won’t be flexible on roster and likely won’t call up anyone that hasn’t been around, and since we have the youngest team in the WC this roster is as much about 2026 then 2022. I hope they are wrong.

Bubble-Watch; GB wants to send a jolt of confidence to the squad and fans alike. Both Ream and Pefok need to be on the plane. Pefok 1000% needs to be in over someone like Jordan Morris if it comes down to the 2, Pefok doesn’t miss that chance at Azteca and this isn’t even an issue. Chris Richards might have a bright future, but he DOESN’’T play for Palace. Wouldn’t you want an experienced player that goes against the English players every week and would be a calming influence in the locker room? Ream has earned the right to go, and you could argue that his relationship w/Jedi is so good and his passing out of the back is so good he could start. One guy for sure that is booked is HD’s favorite Carter-Vickers. Saw him captain Celtic against Shaktar in the CL, and if were betting I’d say he’ll be next to Zimmerman.

GK is down to one spot as Turner (let’s hope that wrist injury is minor) and the return of Zach Steffen leaves one last spot. Steffen has returned and apparently playing well according to Boro fans (looked on their MB and they were saying he’s been their best player for few games now). So with Gaga going to the MLS guys fitness camp it looks like it’s down to the kid, Sean Johnson (his team was still playing during that camp), and Horvath.

Trusty at Birmingham is apparently doing well - he's been around before, so Berhalter would still be abiding by his own commandments should he call in a centerback that's played a match within 2 weeks of the Wales encounter.

Agreed 100% on Ream, bias aside. Any WC squad needs the steadying presence of a wily veteran, even if he never sees the pitch. Just for the dressing room.

I’m increasingly worried that this team will flame out spectacularly. I don’t think one player will necessarily change that. But if things do turn sideways, maybe he can help right the ship before it all goes to hell.

Forget matches or a lighter, somebody ready with a torch!

Turner was at least gonna get Europa games in…he missed his second straight start last night. Mistakenly thought it was a wrist, but it’s a groin/thigh situation. Could Steffen actually be between the pipes?

The Norwich gaffer keeps promising it’s minor but Josh Sargent missed his 2nd straight start due to a calf strain, will be interesting to see if he’s a go on Sat.

Sergino Dest had to be taken off w/a quad injury..

    Limping to the finish line…

I think this is the roster Berhalter will reveal on Wednesday (not the one I'd want, but close):
    GOALKEEPERS
    MATT TURNER
    ZACK STEFFEN
    SEAN JOHNSON

    DEFENDERS

    SERGIÑO DEST
    CHRIS RICHARDS
    A. ROBINSON
    JOE SCALLY
    C. CARTER-VICKERS
    REGGIE CANNON
    W. ZIMMERMAN
    MARK MCKENZIE
    AARON LONG
    DEANDRE YEDLIN

    MIDFIELDERS/STRIKERS

    C. PULISIC
    GIOVANNI REYNA
    B. AARONSON
    WESTON MCKENNIE
    YUNUS MUSAH
    TYLER ADAMS
    TIMOTHY WEAH
    JOSH SARGENT
    RICARDO PEPI
    JESÚS FERREIRA
    C. ROLDÁN
    PAUL ARRIOLA
    KELLYN ACOSTA

If it were up to me:
    Horvath in for Steffen.
    Ream in for Long.
Sands in for Yedlin (for more depth in #6).
I would also have no argument with Johnny in for Roldan and Palmer-Brown in for Carter-Vickers, but am okay with the original two.

I wish we had a Haaland or a Lewandowski, but we do not. If playing with a classic 9 doesn't work, we're going to see a false 9, and if we do, Weah would be my choice, but Ferreira will be Berhalter's. And if that happens, we'll see the usual inverted wingers.

Our real strength is in the midfield and the wings, and I'm hoping we find a way to take advantage of all that skill and talent. Praying for no more injuries. Jedi is the most irreplaceable player of the whole group--without him we lose all of the crosses from the left and become more predictable.

    2 weeks.

Saw a rumor that Tim Ream made the team (would be awesome). We'll see.

    https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/f...-defender-Chris-Richards-ruled-World-Cup.html

Chris Richards is out. Only 22, certainly a tough blow for the kid, and wouldn’t be a surprise
If he is starting in 2026.

Edit: 3 hours out and the rumors be a flyin on Twitter. The crazy one was Steffen being left out (don’t believe that). I think w/the late injuries that Ream will make it, but every prediction I’ve seen has Pefok left off.

Edit Edit: Turner on the bench for Gooners Carabou Cup match. Surely he’ll be on the plane, but he’s now missed his last 3 scheduled starts.

Wow, the Steffen rumor was true. Turner, Horvath, Johnson

Shocker in defense is no Reggie Cannon. Ream earned his way on. Shaq Moore the surprise inclusion.

Midfield surprise was Roldan over Arriola (I’m guessing is in case De La Torre can not go at beginning of tourney).

Forward Biggest surprise is Pepi AND Pefok not going, but Haji Wright is.

Congrats to our boys Tim and Jedi for securing their spots on the plane. And they’ll have Harry Wilson and Dan James on the opposite side for the opener.

I'm a bit surprised by a couple of selections, but honestly they're fringe selections for players that are unlikely to see the pitch in Qatar. I still don't understand the Pefok omission. Berhalter claimed that he felt Wright is in better form than Pefok (and apparently both of them are behind Ferreira and Sargent).

    Biggest surprise is Shaq Moore.

Biggest questions are who will be the center back pairing? Who is the odd man out in the midfield/winger group (Aaronson, Adams, Musah, McKennie, Pulisic, Weah, Reyna all battling for 5 spots)? And lastly, (as always) where are the goals coming from?

For me there were 3 shocking facts in this roster:
    - Wright over Pepi
    - Moore over Cannon
    - The biggest: only 4 CBs and no one who could slide in if 3 get hurt/a red. Cannon offered that on the right. Moore does not. This is a mistake.

(BTW. Leaving Steffen out was the right choice, if I’m sure really hard.)

    Mere disappointments:
    - No Tillman and Palmer-Brown

    Joys:
    - Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeem!!! COYW!
    - The most talented team the US has ever fielded in a World Cup. Even with GGG’s dogmatic tactics, I expect to truly enjoy watching this team play.
    - Most of the best of these players (+ Richards, Robinson, Tillman, Pepi, Vines, Slonina, EPB, Bussio, Tessman, Mihailovic, McKenzie, Paredes, Cannon, Konrad, Sands, Trusty, Che, Tolkin, Dike, Bender, Johnny, Bello, Booth, Ledezma, Otasowie, Che, Hoppe, P. Aaronson and the rest of the talented U20 group, many more, but some will have to change clubs and get their careers back on track) will be closer to their prime in 2026, and that should be even more fun.

I get to find out whom my other team, Poland, will bring tomorrow.

Tim DID earn his way onto the team. And how do you leave off the best keeper in your domestic league? You don’t. Sean Johnson also deserved his spot. Wales will be tough. At this point I’m more worried about Harry than Dan James beating us. But the guy to watch is still Gareth Bale. Just ask the Philly Union.

BBB says that Pepi was not in competition with Wright. It was either Wright or Pefok, and then two out of the three of Ferreira, Pepi, and Sargent. Sargent is a lock at this point, so down to Pepi and Ferreira. It's kind of cruel that it came down to two guys who are good friends. But Pepi will be only 23 in 2026, and if he improves (and bulks up) and manages his career well, he can still end up at three world cups.

nice to see that Citeh's gaffer came up to Reeeeeeeeam after the match and said that had Tim been 24 instead of 34, he'd be starting at Man City.

"Like" wasn't a strong enough affirmation for the link above! So happy he got on the team. I never expected him to had the kind of season he's had so far and I feel bad for doubting him back in August!

If you need more Reeeeeaaaaam, Fulham just posted this interview with him before he left for the World Cup:
