I think that going to Exeter and the opportunity to play with his late father’s thus-far-retired number 9 was so meaningful for Jay that he couldn’t say no. He’ll get tons of minutes in League One and come back a more experienced player. And if he helps them get promoted to the Championship, two Stansfields will be Exeter legends and the #9 twice-retired.

I guess it’s OK to take a chance on frees like Willian and James, but it seems to me that they’ve sort of worn out their welcome in England. Dan James is still only 24, so it makes a bit more sense to roll the dice on him. I remember his pace and holy terror threat in the open field when he was at Swansea, but he may be kind of similar to Ryan Fredericks: their speed with the ball is mitigated by the gap in talent between the Championship and the Premiership. That, and they don’t do many other things equally as well…like scoring. Willian should be more serviceable than he appears at age 34, but Chelsea and Arsenal decided no before he went home to Corinthians last season. Again, limited amount of truly exceptional skill sets. You just don’t get enough opportunities to wiggle yourself free on the right flank for a wicked bender.
I’m skeptical about both, but especially Willian. James’s youth makes him still salvageable. Marco may just be the man to unlock his potential where others have failed.

I've always thought Onomah had the raw material to be a very good player. I'm glad he was included, and I'm hoping he surprises a few people this season.

I'm not sure that Onomah will get a chance. He wasn't given a jersey number, so I assume this is the only way to keep him relevant since he's over 21. I don't know the full set of rules or reasons behind this requirement, but he might also have been included to help satisfy the home grown requirement. Along that same thought process, I don't know why Šekularac was included since he is not over 21 and hasn't appeared with the senior side to date (unless even though he is a Swiss international, he also qualifies as home grown because he was born in England).
