Premier League: Sascha Riether agrees permanent deal with Fulham

German right-back Sascha Riether has joined Fulham on a permanent transfer, Cologne have confirmed.

With the Bundesliga outfit relegated last year, the 30-year-old arrived at Craven Cottage on a season-long loan in July.

And it has been announced that Riether has agreed a new deal with Martin Jol's side on Thursday, for an undisclosed fee.

After an impressive first season in the Premier League, the Germany international has been invaluable for the Cottagers.

Claiming the full back spot as his own despite pressure from Chris Baird and Stanislav Manolev, Riether's signing will come as a relief to Fulham fans.

On leaving Cologne, he said: "Thanks to the FC. The club and the city have grown on me during my time in the Cologne.

"I am pleased after a first season in England and am focused on my other tasks in Fulham. I wish FC Cologne only the best and the imminent promotion to the Bundesliga."

Jol confirms Riether option exercised and states a player has been signed with an official announcement to be made next week. The full article by Simon Peach can be linked above.

Jol talking about future plans also goes some way to dismissing talk of a potential departure.

Wolves' Bakary Sako, Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta and Roma's Maarten Stekelenburg have all been linked with Fulham and the Dutchman revealed he has a deal in place with one of that trio.

"It is not easy," Jol said. "We have to pay a lot of money for these players.

"Of course if you have got players on loan you won't generate a lot of money. They go back, you don't get any money for them.

"We have to be creative again but from the names you named, there is already one on the board. But I will talk to the press next weekend and we will confirm everything."

Asked if Amorebieta was the player in question, he added: "That is one of the pieces of speculation, but you will have to wait and see for next week. You are not hot or cold, you are warm."

One player definitely at Fulham next season is right-back Sascha Riether after German club Cologne yesterday confirmed he had made his loan spell permanent.

"We agreed a deal with Cologne so he will stay here," Jol said. "We took the option, we spoke to them.

"Of course we had that option last year and we took it before May 15 so he will be our player next year."

Fulham and Norwich are among a number of clubs chasing Braga left-back Elderson.

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, the Nigeria international - full name Elderson Uwa Echiejile - is in demand this summer, and the Premier League pair, both in the market for defensive reinforcements, are understood to be keen.
But it appears that Bundesliga side Stuttgart are currently leading the chase and have opened the bidding with a £2.5m offer.
Braga, however, are hoping the interest from England will drive up the price for the 25-year-old, who is under contract for two more years.
