Jol warned that some years 40 points was not enough. I couldn't even think we would be in a position yet again where we could go down. The main change this year from some of the others is the dip in form vs powering through for an escape. I remember a certain Texan who secured us staying up at home against a lighter Liverpool side. Hopefully this year it is a Costa Rican.

So, what if we lose to Liverpool and Swansea, which is a distinct possibility?

If Wigan lose to Swansea or Arsenal and Villa lose to Chelsea Fulham are safe with no more points. There are far too many other scenarios for me to try and figure them all out. Best thing Fulham could do is come out and beat Liverpool and forget about everything else. Suffice it to say there are a lot of ways for Fulham to stay up but it would do my heart good not to be doing the math this time next week.

Everyone can breathe a sigh of relief now. We're one Chelsea victory over Villa from guaranteed safety. Absent that, just getting a point from one of our last two will do the job as well. I'm sure there are other means but at this point they're unlikely to be necessary. For this year, anyway.

Wigan may have finally ran out of pixie dust today when they failed to hold onto the lead not once but twice in front of their home.fans. It looks more and more like this will be the year that Wigan forgets how to fly.

Would rather someone else go down, but once your team starts getting pulled back into the mess it's the 'as long as it's not us' syndrome kicking in. Wigan now has to play the FA Cup Final, then turn around and try to get a result at Arsenal w/hopes of still having a chance on the last day..not looking good.

Not to rekindle the doom and gloom, but on April 16, 2012, Wigan went into the Emirates and won 2-1. So they are capable of it. And Arsenal were in a race for Champions League at that point last year as well.

Still, we should be safe. While I have little faith in us to get a result, I have less in Wigan, Villa, Newcastle, Norwich and Sunderland to all get what they'd need to send us down.

Well, Wigan lost to Swansea yesterday, so there is some more breathing room. But I hate to see Wigan go. I hope they're able to pull it out with someone other than ourselves somehow getting the boot. But with the heartless efforts Fulham have been putting on display for some time, it would be hard to argue that they don't deserve it. When is the last time Fulham lost 5 in a row?

Villa loses to Chelsea in a wild one this morning and Fulham is safe. No way I could root for the Undead, especially w/Guzan, (and an Eric Lichaj sighting) for Villa, but feel better than I did yesterday about where we'll finish.

And The Undead qualify for the Champions League. Hearing Ian Darke say, "Certainly all football fans can celebrate Lampard becoming Chelsea's all time scoring leader" reminded me of the twit who goes to my church who said to me a few years ago, "I think every baseball fan in the world should be happy that the Red Sox have finally won a World Series." some people are so deluded they have no hope of redemption.

Villa and Fulham were safe anyhow. I'm still hoping for Sunderland to disappear down the rabbit hole.

We're officially 100% safe with Wigan's loss to Arsenal today. It makes me kind of sad to see a team like the Latics go down, but they got their FA Cup glory- which is (depressingly) more than we've ever gotten, so I'm not that sad.

Also, :text-+1: :text-+1: :text-+1: for this, Don. The Red Sox and Yankees are pretty much the same thing (a high budget national team with legions of bandwagon fans), but the Red Sox are worse, because the Yankees will actually admit those things.

Too bad for Wigan, but at least their wikipedia page no longer says "have never won a major honour." Like ours does. Oh, well. Could be worse. Could be Wolverhampton.
