Berba Named Player Of The Season
    Sunday 12 May 2013 17:06

Dimitar Berbatov has been named Fulham’s Player of the Season for 2012/13.

The Bulgarian, who joined the Whites from Manchester United in August, took first place in the online voting, just ahead of Greek midfielder Giorgos Karagounis, with Sascha Riether third.

Berbatov said: “I want to thank all the fans that voted for me for the Player of the Season. It is a real pleasure to play at Fulham and I am enjoying my football very much, so to get recognised in this way is very special.

“Football is a team game and obviously this is for all of them too, as we have worked hard to play together and I look forward to many more matches alongside them.”

I've thought for a while that we have the least knowledgeable fans in the Prem. This confirms it. Seriously? The Greek Tragedy finishes 2nd?!?!?!??!? :angry-banghead: This is how I'd expect Jol's ballot to look though, so maybe that's what they did.

:angry-banghead: Indeed Matt. I don't mind the Karagounis as much as you do, but how de he even get on the ballot?? I thought maybe Schwartzer might make a late run because he did have a very good stretch of saves, but shocked Sascha wasn't at least second. This is some serious bull ____:angry-cussingblack: . Kind of fitting w/the way the season is ending.

I can understand the team's leading scorer getting the award. But the Greek coming in second ahead of Riether and Schwarzer? Have Fulham supporters gone mad?

I'm convinced the reason that Karagounis earned so many votes is that he actually looked like he was trying. Fans love effort, even if it ultimately proves fruitless. And in a season where so many of our players looked like they couldn't be bothered, anyone with a solid work rate was going to look good. Even if he was clumsily spraying passes all over the field, he ran his 36-year-old tail off every time.

So Berba wins by producing results while looking like he's not trying. And Karagouins comes in second not producing anything while looking like he's trying desperately. This has been a very, very strange season

The only explanation for Karagounis finishing second is .... sorry but there is no good explanation.

Barry's got it right. Reither had a high work rate as well and actually provided results, so I don't know that it's just b/c Karagounis runs around a lot. My theory is that he's John Paintsil v2.0. He plays to the crowd (in addition to running around and being 90% of useless) and it seems that buys a lot of goodwill from our fanbase, despite shaming Ronaldo with the way he carries on, tackling worse than Nevland, having no sense of defensive positioning and constantly quitting on plays once he's been beaten.

Can't wait to see that tool leave the club.

Wow, I was shocked Karagounis was on this list and kicking myself for forgetting to vote. I think TIm's onto something with talking about fans appreciating effort- and the Greek did have a couple classy goals- he shouldn't have even been on the list. I had an old gym teacher who described our class one day as "flopping around like a bunch of baby seals" and that was what Karagounis looked like a disturbing amount of the time. Riether put in just as much effort and got damn good results. He was consistently our best defender and made some great passes and crosses going forward. It'll be a travesty if we can't find a way to keep him. Still, I can't fault fans picking Berbatov. Berba could be petulant, but he was almost always our best attacking player and legitimate goal-scoring threat on the pitch. Despite the occasional attitude issue, he was pure class when he had the ball at his feet.
