RIP John McCain

    A lifetime of service is over. During a time when everyone in his 4th day in basic training is called a hero, Senator McCain was a real one. I've spent the last 50+ years or so getting quietly angry at the constant trashing of Vietnam veterans -- epecially by those born to wealth who spent their 20s laughing at those of us who served and who continue to do so now well into their 70s.

    I disagreed with much of what John McCain supported, just as I did with Presidents Johnson, Nixon, Carter, Reagan, GHW Bush, Clinton, GW Bush, and Obama, and just as I do with the current president -- not to mention the individuals those folks defeated. I ALWAYS supported the efforts of those gentleman to do a job which is pretty much impossible. I also admire how none of them demanded unswerving loyalty of their fellow party members nor did they publicly insult their service. I respected and respect those who served in Vietnam and later in politics -- Senator Cleland and both Senators Kerry, as well as those who served in our other elective wars.

    I'm sorry we never got a President McCain. He is and was a REAL hero, leader, and patriot. Those who continue to disrespect him -- and all of us in the process -- after his death deserve no respect whatsoever.

    John Sidney McCain III IS an American hero. I disagreed with most of his positions on the best way to run our country, but that doesn't mean nearly as much to me as his sacrificial service to our country. It is unfortunate that fate did not allow him the privilege of serving as our President. I don't know how a McCain presidency would have fared, but I have no doubt that he would have done everything under the guiding principle of what's ultimately best for the country. He suffered and nearly died in what can only kindly be called our most controversial war, refusing early release because he was an admiral's son, knowing the enemy would use it for damaging propaganda against his country. It's a shame that his passing could not escape the shadow of the current occupant of the White House, but he probably could've cared less. He wasn't that selfish.
    RIP Sir.
    We have the watch.

    John McCain was an honorable man doing the best he could for the country he loved. The kind of man you wish we had more of in national politics, instead of the power-hungry vermin of all political stripes who are running things now. As with HD, I disagreed with a lot of his views on things, but that has no effect on my respect for him. It used to be that you could say that someone you disagree with has a good idea about something, without the banshees of the press screaming that that proves you're secretly conceding that they're right about everything (or whatever hysterical BS they're on about today). As one of my Politics professors used to say, "There are issues on which honest men can differ". It's not evidence of a sinister plot. It's sad that honorable men like John McCain are being forced out of the cesspool that is today's political arena.
