Well, he's got a brand-new contract with them. They're gonna have to play him to justify the cost. Kinda feel for the lad.

Back in my Hatter Days -- in the old third division -- there was a guy named Bruce Rioch who was easily the best player in the division. The manager of Rotherham United was a well-known successful character who was in temporary limbo waiting for a better job. He wanted Rioch. Once he became manager of Villa, he pried him away from us. As soon as he left THAT job, he went after him again. Finally, he became manager of Scotland and discovered that Bruce had a Scot grandparent and - bingo -- he became Scottish national. Bruce wound up having a great career despite having knees at 30 worse than mine at 70, and is a consensus challenger as the Best Hatter Ever.

My point? In real life the value of a footballer is directly proportional to how much his manager wants him. There are hundreds of footballers I could name who lost their starting gigs when a new gaffer came to town -- including several Americans of note. It could happen to Chris either way.

Two saved franchises in two seasons looks pretty good on your CV. I think there must be some problems at home driving this.

Thomas Tuchel and Dortmund have parted ways. I certainly didn't see that coming but it sounds like things have been souring for quite some time.

Not sure anyone did. As long as they don't approach us about SJ, it'll be interesting to see who they hire to replace him. They're solidly behind Bayern as the second best side in that league, so I'm sure they don't want to regress. It'll also be interesting to see where Tuchel ends up. Since Mahrez put in a transfer request at Leicester today, maybe the Craig Shakespeare bloom is off the rose. Would he stay if they sacked Craig and brought in Tuchel? Doubt it, but crazier things have happened. And........

Been watching Dortmund every weekend for the last 4 or 5 months. This has been talked about pretty much constantly for 6 or so weeks. Dortmund under Tuchel is fun to watch, but they have a flaw that he seems unable or unwilling to fix. They don't know how to close out matches in which they've got a narrow lead. It cost them points a half dozen times in the last 10 minutes of matches.

Paul Lambert is out at Wolverhampton. Somewhat surprising to me. We had a lot of trouble with his side this season, and I thought he was on his way up the ladder to a big job after he led Norwich City to the Premiership with back to back promotions in 2010 and '11. He's been trending downward since starting well at Aston Villa. Ah, the life of a football manager.
