Way back when... meaning about 1956, my older cousin turned me on to WLAC in Nashville.. one of those storied 'Clear Channel' station that ran full power at night without other stations interference (others on the same frequency had to sign off at sundown). Therefore, covered most of the eastern united states... came in well in Dayton.
If you listened on a car radio.

And the evening DJ was 'John R' playing only R&B.. and back then that meant 'Race Music'.
Believe me though, that term was NOT widely used, no matter what you read now.
So I was listening to Chuck Berry right after he first made the scene nationally (Maybelline) with what then was an unusual style. It would be several years before Berry got played regularly on pop music stations but by 1961 Rock R&B was mainstream for teens and young adults. Especially the Memphis style which I always thought Berry belonged with.

    Wiki John R.

Pretty interesting... he was right there with Alan Freed with a patois closer to Wolfman Jack than Freed.

Addendum: The Daily Mail (America's no holds barred paper from England) published a big ass expose on Chuck:

Jailbird with an indecent taste for scandal: Chuck Berry and a life of crime that started with armed robbery spree and even included embarrassing 'peeping tom' allegation

This is what I wrote on my FB page:
Yep.. he was an outlaw, bad boy, a human being. And musical pioneer.
This is why you separate entertainers and their art and pay no attention to their self-serving drivel. They are Human Beings.
"Berry complained bitterly that he spent his life as a victim of racism.."
    - Yeah, right. As opposed to Jerry Lee Lewis and BB King and Louis Armstrong

Agree, fog; pretty mild across the spectrum of rock 'n roll -- had he advertised a taste for underaged girls, he might have become the GOP's house rock 'n roller instead of Ted Nugent.

Jerry Lee Lewis was a victim of racism?

I think he means Jerry fell out of favor because of scandals while BB and Louis didn't? Just a guess, it is a bit of a head scratcher.

Posting this one since my son started to play drums (he has an e-kit--no acoustic set in our house, please). I now have such a greater appreciation how difficult it is to be coordinated enough to actually play. I tried playing some groves--jeez is it hard to keep your right foot from playing same beat as your right hand and then try to add your left side. Screw it, I think I'll stick to guitar.

Good lord, Sheila you are amazing.

My son also has an e-kit and I had a similar experience. I discovered that my left arm has no musical talent. All my left arm had to do in marching bad was hold my baritone and apparently it couldn't even be bothered to learn how to keep a beat. I'm always amazed at how drummers and pianists can seem to do multiple things at once.

Yeah, learning limb independence to play drums, and something like the piano, is tough for many starting out. Found this thread on Reddit after a google search on the topic and saw this comment:

"Free your mind and your limbs will follow."

Darn you Redditors. Immediately, I couldn't get this song out of my head:

Happy 62nd Birthday to Angus Young. Pretty good quality video from him playing w/Guns & Roses last year at Coachella. Axl had a broken foot, hence his sitting on a throne, but Angus is all over the stage

This is from the Reading Festival in '92 (sound is poor) - Fulham must completely drain Reading.

Grunge music defined my college years and at the time Soundgarden was my favorite. RIP Chris Cornell - thanks for contributing to the soundtrack of my youth.

He was as good a rock vocalist as there ever was. Great version of the Prince written song made famous by Sinead O'Connor
