College Soccer Final 4

Was watching Sportscenter tonight and they showed a kid from Wake Forest score the winning goal against the U of Denver in the National Semi-Final with the last name of Harkes and he looked familiar. Sure enough Ian Harkes is the son of John. Good for Wake, even though they are an ACC school the enrollment is small and they usually play 4th fiddle in their own state (Duke, UNC, NC State). They will be taking on Stanford who beat the aforementioned Tar Heels on PKs. The Cardinal have yet to give up a goal in the tournament. The Final will be played Sunday 2 pm Eastern Time.

 

The Cardinal knocked out the Louisville Cardinals to reach the College Cup.

 

My parents went to Wake Forest so I've always been a fan of the Demon Deacons. They were ranked #1 last year but lost to eventual winner Stanford in the quarter finals. So this is a bit of a rematch from last year. Hopefully they get revenge. Wake is a small school but does a few things well like golf and soccer and basketball when Tim Duncan is playing.

 

Sorry Micah, Stanford managed to go the entire Final 4 without scoring during play only to win on PKs both matches. From reading the match report the field was a disaster.

 

I watched a good portion of the first half of the UNC/Stanford semifinal match. It was refreshing to see the game played without the flopping and writhing and extensive time wasting (e.g., kicking the ball away when the other team has a kick/throw) that you see at the professional and international levels.
