CARSON, California (July 14, 2014) – The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team overcame a 1-0 first-half deficit to beat Chile 2-1 in each team’s first game of the 2014 National Training Center Invitational. Andrija Novakovich and Zach Pfeffer, both second-half subs, contributed the equalizer and game winning goals, respectively. Pfeffer also assisted Novakovich’s game-tying goal.

CARSON, California (July 16, 2014) – The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team won its second game in the 2014 Men’s National Training Center Invitational early Wednesday evening, defeating Bermuda 4-0 on the strength of three first-half goals and a stout defensive performance.

With the win, the U.S. is tied with Australia with six points atop the standings, but holds the top spot on goal differential. The U.S. and Australia square off on Friday at 7 p.m. PT at StubHub Center (live on ussoccer.com) in what has become the deciding game of the NTC Invitational. With the 8goal differential situation, the USA can win the event with a draw or victory against Australia on Friday.

On Wednesday, the U.S. started off quickly against Bermuda, pressuring from the start and dominating possession for most of the first half. Forwards Andrija Novakovich and Zach Pfeffer were dangerous for the U.S., creating chances early on multiple occasions.

The U.S. broke a scoreless tie in the 27th minute when defender Caleb Smith made his way down the left sideline and fed across the face of the goal, where he found Novakovich alone in front of the goal for the tap in. It was Novakovich’s second goal of the tournament.

Pfeffer converted a penalty kick in the 39th minute to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead after Novakovich was fouled in the box by Bermuda defender Jaylon Bather. Novakovich had the advantage on the defense and was readying himself to shoot as he was taken down, leading to the penalty kick. Pfeffer converted as he placed the ball into the left corner, out of Bermuda goalkeeper Jahquil Hill’s reach.

The U.S. extended the lead to 3-0 in the 45th minute when forward Tommy Thompson, a late addition to the U.S. U-20 MNT roster for this event, took a cross in the middle of the box, dribbled once to his right and fired a shot past Hill and into the right corner of the net.

The second half was comparatively dominant as the U.S. allowed few scoring chances and continued to lead the possession battle. The U-20 MNT picked up its fourth goal in the 85th minute, an own goal, off of a corner kick that ricocheted off the right upright then hit a Bermuda defender and ended up in the back of the net.

The U.S. outshot Bermuda 26-2, including 12 shots on goal, and took 13 corners compared to just three for Bermuda.

Bermuda had its first shot on goal in the 74th minute when Zaire Burchall got behind the U.S. defense and forced U.S. keeper Zack Steffen to come off his line to deflect the shot, which the U.S. defense then booted out of bounds for a Bermuda corner kick.

The NTC Invitational comes to close on Friday, July 18. Bermuda faces Chile at 4 p.m. PT at StubHub Center and the USA takes on Australia at 7 p.m. Both games will be streamed live on ussoccer.com

U.S. U-20 MNT Wins NTC Invitational with Scoreless Draw Against Australia

CARSON, California (July 18, 2014) – The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team concluded the inaugural National Training Center Invitational with a draw against Australia at StubHub Center, resulting in the U.S. earning the championship trophy.

Both Australia and the U.S. finished with seven points atop the standings, but the goal differential of plus-5 achieved by the U.S. was greater than Australia’s (plus-4) and awarded the USA the title. Australia finished as the runner-up.

Both teams had multiple opportunities to score, much to the delight of the American Outlaws who attended the game and were vocal throughout. The U.S. hit the upright or crossbar four times, coming within inches of scoring on various occasions. Lynden Gooch alone hit the frame three times.

Australia tested U.S. goalkeeper Zack Steffen early when Brandon Borello found a seam and got behind the defense, forcing Steffen off his line to corral the ball at Borello’s feet.

The U.S. had a near goal in the sixth minute when Tommy Thompson dribbled down the right side and lifted a cross into the box, bringing Australia goalkeeper Jordan Thurtell off his line. The ball fell to U.S. midfielder Fernando Arce, who lofted a shot from the edge of the box that was headed over the goal by an Australia defender.

U.S. midfielder Romain Gall had a free kick from five yards outside the box in the 21st minute and he fired a shot over the wall that hit the upper left corner of the goal and bounced over.

Australia’s Daniel De Silva took a shot from the right side outside the box in the 31st minute, forcing Steffen to make a leaping save to his right.

Gooch gave the U.S. another great chance in the 37th minute when he fired a left-footed, running shot from well outside the box that crossed past Thurtell and hit the right upright before bouncing away.

The U.S. forced Thurtell into action again just two minutes later with a beautiful combination that saw midfielder Paul Arriola dribble toward the end line to the left of goal before finding Arce alone in the center of the box. Arce struck the ball with full force, but his shot was just above Thurtell’s head and he was able to reach up just in time to deflect it away.

In the 46th minute, Gooch’s shot hit the upright again. Gooch took a shot from the edge of the box that was just out of Thurtell’s reach, but proved to be just off target as the ball caromed off the right post.

Thompson dribbled through a sea of Australia defenders in the 77th minute and freed himself for a shot to the right of the penalty area. His shot was deflected wide. Gooch hit the crossbar again in the 79th minute with a shot from the middle of the field outside the 18-yard box that Thurtell tipped, grazing the crossbar and continuing over the goal and out of bounds.

The U.S. U-20 MNT now begins preparations for 2015 U-20 World Cup Qualifying, which begins in January. The team will come together for several foreign-based training camps before the end of the year.

MARBELLA, Spain (Nov. 12, 2014) – U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team midfielder Romain Gall scored two goals, including a shorthanded, game-winning penalty kick in second-half stoppage time, and the USA defeated Russia’s U-21 national team 4-3 in the opener of the 2014 Marbella U-21 International National Teams Football Tournament at the Marbella Football Center.

For the final 10 minutes, the USA played down a man because of a second yellow card issued to Emerson Hyndman. Nevertheless, the U.S. stepped up in the moment with the score tied at 3-3. Second-half sub Tommy Thompson took a shot in the box that deflected off of a Russia defender’s hand, and the U.S. was awarded the PK.

There were mixed emotions for Emerson Hyndman on Wednesday as the United States Under-20s defeated Russia Under-21s 4-3, with the Fulham midfielder sent off late on.

In what was the opening game of the 2014 Marbella U21 International National Teams Football Tournament, Russia went ahead through Vyacheslav Karavayev’s 13th minute effort but were pegged back shortly after when Romain Gall netted the rebound after Joel Soñora had seen his shot saved.

Andrija Novakovich put the States in front on the stroke of half-time with a floated shot into the top corner, but Russia were level 10 minutes after the restart through Aleksandr Morgunov’s goal.

Hyndman – who had started the game – then picked up his first booking of the afternoon, before the Europeans retook the lead courtesy of an Arshak Koryan strike on 71 minutes, with the young Russian following up after his initial penalty had been saved.

The States were awarded a penalty of their own six minutes later though which was duly converted by substitute Dembakwi Yomba to make it 3-3.

Fulham midfielder Hyndman was then shown a second yellow card on 83 minutes, but the man disadvantage didn’t hinder his side, who won the game two minutes into stoppage time courtesy of Gall’s second goal of the game.

America are next in action against the Republic of Ireland on Saturday, before taking on Canada on Tuesday.

At Under-19 level, Marek Rodák and Slovakia guaranteed top spot in Group 4 of their UEFA Championship Qualifying Round with a 4-1 victory over Azerbaijan.

MARBELLA, Spain (Nov. 15, 2014) – The U.S. Under-20 Men’s National Team defeated Ireland 1-0 at Estadio San Pedro, posting its second victory in as many games at the 2014 Marbella U-21 International National Teams Football Tournament.

Dembakwi Yomba scored his second goal of the tournament and USA goalkeeper Santiago Castaño made four saves for the clean sheet.
